Analysis: energy pipeline that supplies West threatened by war Georgia conflict
UK Times Online ^ | August 8, 2008 | Robin Pagnamenta

The conflict that has erupted in the Caucasus has set alarm bells ringing because of Georgia's pivotal role in the global energy market.

Georgia has no significant oil or gas reserves of its own but it is a key transit point for oil from the Caspian and central Asia destined for Europe and the US.

Crucially, it is the only practical route from this increasingly important producer region that avoids both Russia and Iran.

The 1,770km (1,100 miles) Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which entered service only last year, pumps up to 1 million barrels of oil per day from Baku in Azerbaijan to Yumurtalik, Turkey, where it is loaded on to supertankers for delivery to Europe and the US. Around 249km of the route passes through Georgia, with parts running only 55km from South Ossetia.

Has anyone noticed how close Ossentia, and Azerbaijan (where the US has military air bases) is from Iraq ...and Iran for that matter?

We’re going to learn more and more about how much fun it is to have our energy supplies controlled by our enemies.

Nancy Pelosi will continue to prance about, telling anyone who will listen about her need to “save the planet.”

From where does this oil originate and how does it arrive at Baku?

I’m wondering if this is what sparked the attack?

I would be surprised to not see an attempt to push up prices based on this. Interestingly the whopping 1 million bpd it supplies is roughly 1.1% on the global scale but watch it raise the price better than 5%.

They’ve been pumping oil in the Baku area since before WW1. This was one of the areas that Hitler hoped to seize when he moved forces into the Caucasus. Stalingrad ended that.

I believe this oil all comes out of Azerbaijan, and if not, it’s all out of the Caspian region which is supposed to contain the 3rd largest oil deposits in the world. Some of may come into the port in Baku from other Caspian sources (I’m not sure). Hitler wanted to take control of this region in ‘41 due to its energy and strategic significance.

My understanding is that Israel also owns a portion of the BTC with oil which arrives at Ceyhan in Turkey then being transported to Ashkelon and from there to the Israeli Red Sea port of Eilat where it’s loaded onto tankers and shipped to the Far East. Supposidly the Israelis offered Putin an investment in the pipline and Russia rejected. They don’t want a minority stake, they want to control all the pipelines feeding Europe and the West. This would also appear to be very important to Israel who reportedly has 1,000 military advisors in Georgia presently. One can see from the map how strategically important Georgia is for the supply of energy from the Caspian region with Russia and Iran flanking Georgia immediately to the north and south.

Right now Putin is the puppetmaster in Iran and between Gazprom and Iran Russia would control between 40 and 50% of the world’s natgas reserves. I’m certain Georgia is just the first domino in Putin’s mind.

Right. There’s a comeuppance here. Libs are always yapping about no blood for _________ (fill in the gap, usually a resource like oil), yet many wars are fought for just that reason. One can beg to “talk” until the sun goes down but there’s some folks that’ll just start pullin’ triggers, then suddenly it’s 3AM!

And this is the real stake, but many will tell you its not our fight as they are pumping $10 a gallon gas into their trucks and cars.

Please bring back our bubble! Pretty please! Capitalism is supposed to collapse and Russia and the Arabs are supposed to control the future forever. Pretty please?

It is hopeless. All the kings horses and all the kings men, can't put this bubble back together again. It was losing the left the elections in America. And the whole grand strategy falls to pieces if America isn't run by moral cowards.

This is just more empirical evidence that America cannot rely on foreign energy sources. Too bad there are no oil fields in or around America to develop domestically. /s
