What Georgia needed a week ago was some ICBM's permanently aimed at Moscow. I seriously doubt that was ever in the cards.
A very scary proposition. Georgia was already crazy enough to think that they could pick a fight with Russia by invading South Ossetia. Placing nukes in Georgia would make their heads swells to dangerous proportions. I am just glad that they started this thing before joining NATO, and NATO wisely does not accept nations with territorial disputes.

I don’t think all the muzzies are a threat and we could do a better job dealing with China and Taiwan.

I was watching Ralph Peters on C-SPAN a little while ago. Some Wesley Clark fan from Minnesota phoned in with a long-winded question. In his reply, Peters mentioned that he had worked for Wesley Clark and tried to say a few nice things about him (e.g., personal bravery while serving in the army), but was adamant that he should never be allowed to be in a position of power. He cited the hat-swap with Ratko Mladic and almost starting WWIII in Kosovo as examples of his poor instincts.

Yet another issue on which President Clinton dropped the ball and President Bush is left with the consequences.

I’m sure we meant what we said whenever we told the Russians that a missile shield is a purely defensive measure against rogue states that threaten regional security. But Russians are a paranoid lot with a history of lousy political leadership. With the pronouncements that routinely come from their leaders, you can understand what a deep appreciation for irony the Russians have. Difficult to convince them to trust us even if we aren’t going out of our way to make them nervous.

Sure it is. It is a game of taunt the west. This is a dry run for the reconquest of the Ukraine, 2 years into Obama's presidency. China will eat Taiwan and Iran will nuke Israel at the same time.
This is no time to go wobbly. Appeasement means world war.

Trust has nothing to do with it. They are just murdering goons, and everything is just an excuse to murder people who PO them. An effort to revive the collapsing oil bubble through security premiums on tension is a bonus motive.

The American people dropped President Bush. That is the problem. And only that.

I certainly think we should back up any good faith gestures with muscle, but if we miscalculate, Russia’s reaction will only make the situation worse. Nobody is going to storm Moscow and march Putin and his old KGB office buddies to the scaffold like Saddam Hussein. But if we’re clever about what we do, we can undermine the leadership in Russia that wants another Soviet Union because they are fighting a larger war against reality.

Russia is scared spitless that “former client states” will go the route of Kosovo - declare they are independent - with the backing of the West.
Paranoia doesn't begin to cover it.
While I ‘sort of’ enjoyed by time in the CIS, it was very surreal in many ways.....

Worrying about the reactions of murderous fascist goons is a losing proposition. No plan that passes through their will and decision will ever be anything but disasterous for humanity. Stop asking the permission of barbarians to live, and fight them already. Give Ukraine nukes tomorrow, and take away Iran's by force.

"Hope the POTUS does the right thing and not go along with the flow to make Russia happy..."I wonder what it was like for only Laura Bush to be between President Bush and Putin at the opening ceremonies. The TV cameras went off the ceremonies to President Bush and Putin having a discussion after the ceremony started. Putin was leaning over Laura.

NATO should immediately approve Georgias membership apps ASAP, with all benefits to be retroactively granted. See how that plays with Vladimir Putative. With the price of oil rising, the dollar sinking, our credit in the toilet, our military stretched to the breaking point and "reliable" allies in old Europe dependent on Soviet Russian natural gas, Good luck!

Russia isn’t scared of anything...a lot of difference between how Putin reacts and how the US reacts to threats. We make endless trips to security councils and try to get UN sanctions....he sends in tanks and wipes out the problem. Obama is no match for him and others of his ilk.
