Two Russian warplanes shot down by Georgia as more raids in conflict

Georgia claims to have shot down ten aircraft and captured a Russian pilot.

Kakha Lomaia, the secretary of Georgia's security council, said: "We have hit a Russian fighter this morning and the pilot has been captured."

The two countries are close to full scale war after Russian tanks invaded the tiny territory in response to Georgian attacks on Moscow-backed separatists.

South Ossetia's rebel leader said more than 1,400 civilians had been killed in the first day of fighting around the capital Tskhinvali.

Foreign journalists witnessed an air attack on the town of Gori early on Saturday morning and the Georgian government claimed Russian bombers had "completely devastated" the Black Sea port of Poti - a key transit route near a major gas pipeline.

Russia had reportedly started to bomb civil and economic infrastructure, including the Black Sea port of Poti and the military base at Senaki. Between 8 and 11 Russian jets reportedly hit container tanks and a shipbuilding plant at the port.

Moscow has announced it would send reinforcements into South Ossetia and President Dmitry Medvedev has pledged to "force the Georgian side to peace".(continued)

Whoah... this would be a sign that the Georgian Forces are quite capable. Propaganda is the cry of the hour now of course, but I hope that the Georgians are giving the Russians a rough time.

In this case, we should hope the Russians get a good whipping. They’ve done all they can to exacerbate tensions in the world since the Putin arrived on the scene. He’s arming Iran, Syria, and Venezuela. In the case of Iran, the arms deals supply Hizbollah and Hamas. Putin’s Russia also assists Iran in building its nuclear weapons, blocks effective sanctions Iran’s mad mullahs, encourages futile negotiations with Iran’s lunatic leaders, and then blusters over US placement of a missile shield that could be used to protect Europe from the Russian-supplied uranium in Iran’s missiles. Putin’s Russia is no friend of the West nor of Israel. Russia under him is a gangster state, corrupt, brutal, ultra-nationalistic, irredentist, and belligerent. Democracy failed in Russia due to Putin, TIME’s Man of the Year.

And don't forget that Russia is considering sending its forces back to Cuba too. That's not a benign move.

This is quickly spiraling out of control.

Why 2nd Div Vet, you know well that wars always spiral out of control, remember the old adage: after the first shot, all plans are out the window and from then on it's act and react.

But remember, we can always send in Barry and he can hold up his new Nazi-salute and quell the madding crowds...

Georgia attacked first and killed Russian peacekeepers. I find it sad that two Christian nations are at war with each other but in this case Russia is not the bad guy.

Sorry to say but we set the pattern for Russia to follow when Clinton and NATO bombed Serbia back to the stone age, in order to benefit Bin Laden and the Kosovo Liberation Army.

The Edwards crap trumps a war involving a major power as news.Where are the same whining scumbags that protested Israeli bombing in Lebanon?I guess when Russia does it,no sweat.Because after all,Georgians are just free Christians trying to survive as a nation, not Muslim Hezbollah extremists.Gotta love the media and the activists.

Georgia attacked first and killed Russian peacekeepers.

Georgia was responding to rocket launches from Ossetia. They walked right into the bear trap. Same thing happened to Israel in the last Lebanon war. This enemy is somewhat predictable.

The U.S. MUST get Ukraine in NATO - NOW.

This about more than Georgia. Ita about Ukraine and the Baltic States. “Putie” wants the Soviet Empire back again.

Why is there still a tunnel between north and south Ossetia?

This enemy is somewhat predictable.

Indeed he is, just like liberal quote from Bushwacker777:

I find it sad that two Christian nations are at war with each other but in this case Russia is not the bad guy.

A Christian Nation, has Islamic Jihadi groups set within it's borders by communists and the Jihadi begin shelling the Christian homes. When the governmnet trys to stop the shelling, the neighboring Communists invade to help the Jihadi. The liberals in their amazing intelligence and superiority feel sorry for the traitors the Jihadi, and cannot tell the difference between people living in their own sovereign nation and an invasion, Christians and Islam ro Communists vs democracy! It is all one big "shame" to blame on Christians.

Absolutes and polar opposites blur to become one big "shame", and then shame must be placed on their favorite knee jerk scape goat christians. No sign of any reasoning, just shallow emotions masquraiding as "understanding".

In reality it is just fools, running from God with no effort to think for themselves outside of the lies they cling to excuse a hedonistic lifestyle placing their failure to use the brain between their ears over the brain between their legs.

. They hate American values because America's freedom requires personal responsibility, they hate democracy because with democracy comes the need to think beyond their own selfish lives, and they hate Christians because they live in a greater hope for morality and painfully remind them of something beyond themselves.

Good point.

This area is not that far from the Balkans, a troubled area for a long time.

Georgia did NOT attack first, this build up to this immediate conflict started in late May by a combined force of north and South Ossetian militiamen directly supplied, equipped, trained by and on the Russian payroll.

The KGB Colonel has deep black eyes, like a lifeless doll, like a shark. But he has humor. And he has laughed his ass off over the years how the US has pumped huge amounts of money into his country.
