I'll trust background checks when I can trust the checker to dump the records. I would also have to trust that they would never be used to deny arms to people who have a Second Amendment right to them. Since the government already uses them for that purpose, it's pretty clear how far I trust that.

Checking is fine. They “check” my ID (even still, sometimes) when I buy booze. I show them, they glance at it, and I go on my way. No records made or kept. Enforcement is by probing the checkers, not by cataloging the buyers.
