Its not worth a war over a province in a far away land. Not now, not ever. Its scary all right—looks like the 1930s all over again. But we are not ready for a war at this time and that place. Nothing good can come of war at this point in history. That’s my view.

Hi there Devil Dog,
Well, they were a staunch ally in the Great War, losing 15% of their male population in that one, and they were again our allies in WWII, losing a million people to the nazis and rescuing about 600 American airmen in Operation Halyard:

“The next 24 hours will determine Georgia’s fate.”

I think it’s pretty clear what their fate will be, unless, of course, the Russian’s change their minds.

This may be a limited engagement. Not to put you on the spot, but whats your feel at the moment?

On another note as far as Soviet expansionism goes, I almost wish the Soviets would drive through the smaller republics & roll right up to Iran if not partially in it. They could also make well use of the Caspian Sea to close off Iran. Not that they will of course.

The only single-engined jet aircraft in Russian Air Force service is the Su-22. The Su-22 was retained in the recce role. All the MiG-23s and MiG-27s in Russian Air Force service were retired in the 1990s.

Well, at least it would finally prove just how useless they are against newer low frequency radars. We’d be out of 20 bombers, though.

I can't believe they are completely neutralized. Our planners had to have foreseen those radars. Also consider that specops and/or air attacks would target those specific radars in advance.

It has nothing to do with the seperatists...it is a Sudetenland style gambit by the russians and we and Europe would be fools to allow it to go with out significant oppostions in an attempt to help Georgia bloodt the Near's nose and stall their attmpt.

In an ideal world, I would readily agree with you. But, we now live in a cynical age of realpolitik. Our credit is overextended, our military is tired and the American public will not stomach more military adventures. To engage in another foreign adventure, despite many justifiable reasons, would be the height of folly.

Question also is, if Georgia gets into trouble, are we willing and prepared to offer overt support?

I don’t think it gets that far.

WE have some ground forces there dont we? There might be some dramatic standoffs where no rounds are fired (Berlin Cold War)

No, not the Fencers. The Fencers are being upgraded. The Floggers are the aircraft that were retired from Russian Air Force service.

Also the A-10’s by the time they got there, would be wiped out of the sky.

They don’t. The Russians launched a strike on the Georgian airbases. The Georgian Foreign Ministry announced that the strikes had destroyed several military aircraft.

Tell me then, when will we be ready? I have played poker with people like you. Sitting at the table calling and waiting for the unbeatable hand and folding to anyone that makes a sizeable bet, only to learn when the hand is over that your two pair would have won. You continue to do so, waiting on the perfect hand anteing all your money untill the bully bluffer leaves you with nothing to bet.OTOH, once he finds out you are willing to call does he back down with his aggressivenes and becomes more civil. Oh, he will go to the next table and try the same tactics and if no one opposes him he will win. Right now we are sitting at that table, our chips are stacked high, do we fold or call his bluff?

You might be right on that one. They have not seemed to have been all to alarmed by stealth technology.

No, no, no... Russia, Syria, Iran and Hizballah can’t be our enemies and we can’t be theirs. There’s a constitutional process, you see...

We’re all close, close friends.

The Ossetians and Gerogians have been at war for centuries.

The South Ossetians want to be part of Russia, not ruled by Georgia.

Almost all of them have Russian passports.

It’s a mess. I don’t say the Georgians have no interests here, but this was a premedidated massive attack by Georgia which totally destablized a bad situation.

I don’t believe we should clean up this ethnic mess, which Georgia turned critical with their actions of the past 24 hours, and one hour after calling a ceasefire. That was clear treachery.
