I suspect there is some gamesmanship going on. The “bimbo eruptions” of 1992 were calculated to divert attention from then candidate Clinton's more substantive failings. By sidetracking the discussion into a discussion of infidelity, he avoided scrutiny on other matters — such as his inexperience, corruption and anti-American proclivities.
