“The republicans can’t touch it because McCain was born in Panama, if they attack Obama on this point the blow-back could take out their candidate.”

That is patently false.

I know more than a hundred people born overseas to Army families(mostly in Germany). Being born on a military base is exactly the same as being born on U.S. soil. There is no debate about that, and Obama’s potential situation is only vaguely similar.

Here's his BC:

Note that it says Colón, PANAMA.

Facts are stubborn things.

***And the military would fall solidly behind McCain on this item. It’s a win-win for the republicans to break this story, I don’t see why it isn’t happening right now.

Actually. No, it isn't.

There is no debate about that,

Actually. Yes, there is.

Last election cycle Sen. Claire McCaskill was sufficiently worried about this very point that she introduced a bill to declare McCain qualified.

Why do you suppose she went through all that unsuccessful effort to shore up a position you think is glaringly obvious?

Because it wasn't at all clear.

It still isn't.

The bill never passed as a law, only as a "sense of the senate"

No! It is still considered being born overseas.

I think that the case with McCain is different because he was born in Canal Zone (not Panama) and it was considered US territory. Same problem Barry Goldwater had because he was born on Arizona territory.
