“What does a “wash” refer to?”

A “wash” in Arizona is a dry waterway, usually cut through the desert as the result of torrential rains. Once the water drys up, they become topographical “features” in the desert used by wildlife to move through, etc.

If I knew how to post pics on FreeRepublic I'd show you one.
