Cantor silent on VP talk, but reveals economic idea
The Virginian ^ | August 6, 2008 | Tyler Whitley

While Rep. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th, again refused Wednesday to address speculation that he might be John McCain’s running mate, he gave a speech that could be interpreted as an audition for the job. Speaking to the Greater Richmond Chamber at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Cantor proposed a “middle-class bill of rights” to ease voters’ concerns about the slumping economy. Cantor, who is Jewish, also talked about his family’s humble immigrant roots. A representative of the chamber introduced Cantor as “our rock star.” “My kids would be amused,” he said. Cantor said his father’s mother came to Richmond as an immigrant from Russia. As a young widow, she raised a family atop a grocery store she owned and ran in Jackson Ward and on Church Hill.

Hattip to SJackson on this one.

Some nice family details, along with good policy proposals.

I'll post the picture again so people recognize him when he's sworn in as VP.

Thanks for posting all of the articles about Eric
Cantor. He’s my congresscritter and I like him a lot.

My impression is that he’s been very tight-lipped about this. I think if he weren’t interested, he would come right out and say so and end the speculation.

Time will tell.

Tex, I just had another thought on why I like this idea.

America is given the choice between electing Hussein Obama as president or an America-loving Conservative Jew as vice president. Which candidate is the best one to show Islamists terrorists that we're Americans, we're not giving into them, and they can go to hell? Putting Cantor on the ticket is like flipping the bird at these benighted bigots.

I'b never heard of this guy before last week, but I really like what I see, so far.

Cantor as VP would allow me to vote for McCain sober.

Otherwise, I'll have to be dead drunk, to do the deed.

I wish he was my rep in Congress. My rep is the infamous Jim Moran (alias Moron) that all the libs in Arlington keep re-electing time after time.

Without doing my own research, help me out, please. Honest question: is it just you alone generating Cantor buzz here on FR, or the buzz is there indeed, as a trying balloon maybe?

Sounds like a nice guy, add me in to the ping list to watch, please.

If Cantor gets the nod, I wonder if anyone on the right would have the pair to run an ad like this.

"We're betting that Barack Obama's friends aren't too thrilled with John McCain's choice of running mate..."

Then show the clips of Rev. Wright spouting "Israel is a dirty word" and maybe a little Calypso Louie in there as well. Then show pics of Obama with these guys.
I've thought for a while that the overt anti-semitism of Obama's associates, not just their obvious anti-white and anti-American rantings, was something that should be played up a lot more for our advantage.

It is not just MWT, though they are the keeper of the rapidly growing ping list.

There is something very attractive about a 97% (100% in 2007) ACU rating that makes Conservatives interested after months of Wanabes...

Well, all I am doing is gathering articles -— most of which are brought to my attention by other Freepers -— because somehow I got talked into making a ping list when I had the flu.

Hey, I am occupied Friday and keep the Sabbath — can I send you the ping list and you take over Friday/Saturday?

It’s google “Eric Cantor,” news, sort by date, post as needed. Morning, noon, 5:00.

Seems like a decent guy, but not sure I like the exempting of taxes on overtime: better just to lower rates or you’ll be unfairly exempting regular salaried workers and creating an incentive for more people to get paid less up front. France is a whole different bundle of circumstances.

A tax cut is a tax cut; don’t really care how it’s done.

That said:

1. I agree, it’s inartful, but you eat an elephant one bite at a time.

2. On the other hand, as an employer, I know that the 20% of guys who do overtime are often the guys who do 80% of the work.

I wish he was my rep in Congress.

I am most fortunate that Eric Cantor is my rep in congress. I met him a couple times before he was elected to congress, and he is an unswerving conservative. If he is not put on the ticket, I am hoping that the prominence he has gained will allowed to ascend higher in GOP house leadership. (He's already deputy whip.) I will be going up to DC tomorrow and will be visiting his office and the house floor. I provide a full report late Friday night.

Yeah, but I was long an employer and exempt employees often regularly put in overtime for their salary: it’s unfair to also exempt them (and the self-employed) from a tax break. It’s nanny-state meddling.
