That's the underlying problem with Washington. It's so far away from the rest of the nation, and even Jefferson feared that the capital would become inadequate as the young nation acquired land.
“I’ve always advocated that the nation’s capital should be moved to a better position, maybe to north-central Missouri or south-central Illinois. D.C. should be declared a historical site, and the new capital should be just that, a federal capital.”
Me,too. Try the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers.
Just like Rome got New Rome (Constantinople) and revived itself and lived for another thousand years, maybe we can get a New Washington (”Columbia”?) and get a fresh start.
In the late 1800's there was just such a proposal inCongress to move the Capitol to the geographic center of the continent (Just on the north end of Kansas).
D.C. has home rule again at thet time and the mayor, Boss Shepherd bribed, cajoled, lobbied etc. etc.,Congress into leaving the Capitol where it is.
It still is a good idea to move our capitol to Kansas; safer too.
Something easier to do: reduce the borders of DC to just the section where the federal buildings are. Take the slums in the north and east and cede them back to Maryland. Have DC proper be a gated community, where if you do not work for the federal government, then you have to move out
They also said all the branches of government shouldn’t be in one place.
