We were advised to get the alpha fetoprotein test and I asked the NP if that was the one that gave a false positive at a ratio of 80:1 and she said, “Yes” and I said, “No”. I told her that it wouldn’t make any difference in our decision to keep the baby; abortion was not an option.

She looked me in the eye and said, “I wish more people felt that way.” and never had a bit of grief about it after that.

Interesting that there is such an emphasis on “genetic counseling” which is really just a euphemism for eugenics counseling.

Sometimes having information is not a good thing. I wonder how many parents have been unnecessarily agitated by tests that indicate that there is an elevated chance of their child having some sort of genetic anomaly, when the reality is the kid was just fine all along, not to mention the infanticides that result.

Genetic counseling is one of those things you should just say “no” to.
