Words have MEANINGS. The factual and literal meaning of the word “bastard” is “child of unmarried parents.” If this child is indeed John Edwards’, she is in fact a bastard.

Thank you. It's unfortunate for all bastard children, but it is what they are. Orwell wrote a prescient book. When the meaning of words are destroyed, or worse, becoming "hate speech", well, we all know what happens, don't we?

Yes, I believe that everyone here knows the dictionary term of the word. What really matters is that the word has mostly lost its dictionary meaning and is now an insulting slur.
Whatever the marital state of the parents, God knew everything about this baby before the creation of the universe. We should see this baby as God sees him, regardless of how much we dislike the destructive politics and reprehensible acts of John Edwards.
Further, I have to give credit to the mother — and to Edwards — by not aborting the baby. That would have been the convenient thing to do. Thank God that they chose life.
