I am not familiar with the statistics, but I would be willing to bet the farm that crime in China is way way below crime in the U.S. But then again, we have to protect the rights of criminals.

As a regular traveler to Beijing I can assure you that while there is some crime, and it is mostly petty crimes, they would never think of robbing a foreigner (most foreigners don’t carry cash and it’s illegal for resident Chinese to posess
foreign currency). The streets are very safe, even in the poorest of neighborhoods I can walk without fear. Same for the subways, even late at night. Scheduled to be back in Beijing mid September and looking forward to it.
