Further, how would we actually implement tire inflation improvement nationwide? Set up government-run “tire inflation” check points for people to drive into, to make sure they’re “doing their part”?

In Tampa they have a report of more accidents caused by people overinflating the tires to get better mileage. You get a bigger diameter of the tire and less revolutions per mile but the tires blow out.

And exactly what are the parameters that make a tire "under-inflated?" My car monitors tire pressure and a warning light comes on if a tire in underinflated. However, there is a range for tire inflcation and the light doesn't come on until the lower end of the range is reached.
In any event, we can't inflate our way out of this crisis.

Not being mentioned anywhere. You over inflate your tires you knock the crap out of your shocks. That will cost you big time compared to the minuscule gas savings.

(If it's in the Yellow Pages our government shouldn't get involved.)
