Zia was after my time, though my dad knew him as he (Dad) was the Assistant Air Attache to the US Embassy - actually, back in those days we and everybody else called it the American Embassy. Don’t get me started...
I was there while Zia was president. My dad was there working for USAID off and on in the 80's.
There was actually a major American presence in Pakistan at that time - the US extended a bunch of aid to Pakistan in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1980.
