Expert urges China visitors to encrypt data

Aug 3, 2008 - 9:02:10 AM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China's blocking of Web sites has embarrassed the International Olympic Committee, but a computer security expert said on Thursday that visitors to Beijing also needed to protect their data from prying eyes.

"People who are going to China should take a clean computer, one with no data at all," said Phil Dunkelberger, chief executive of security software firm PGP Corp.

Well considering that DHS can impound the computer upon reentry it would be wise to take a disposable computer anyway.

Its always smart to protect vital data anytime you travel. China has enough hackers working that they really don’t need you to bring your PC to them. Of course you should be careful you don’t access the internet illegally and end up an organ donor while there.

They don’t mention it in the linked story, at one time there were restriction on the level of encryption you could use on systems going out of the country (whether they were going to stay there or not), anybody know if that’s still a concern?

I heard it during the early part of Clinton days. Not sure if it is still in effect. However, I think they are still serious about protecting encryption technology.

News here this morning, Tuesday 05 Aug, is mentioning the downturn in hotel room rates and Olymipic prices altogether due to a lack of tourists coming into Beijing.

People are canceling reservations also. Package tour operators are freaking out.

China can happily forgo festive Olympics with lots of foreign tourists in return for ‘no-trouble’ Olympics.
Tour operators can pound sand, as far as they are concerned.
