New Mexico's two U.S. Senate contenders appear headed for a showdown on national TV.

MARTY ON BARACK: The New Mexico Republican Party on Friday fired off a news release highlighting comments that Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez, a Democrat, made to the National Journal about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. “The real question in my mind is whether Senator Obama is going to be able to capture Hispanics by a significant margin,” the magazine quoted Chavez as saying. “That's a big 'if,' because he's clearly an urbanite.”

Chavez in a Friday interview with this newspaper said his point is that the presidential candidates need to reach out to Hispanics.
