If you're suffering these problems in IE7, add “*.sitemeter.com” to your list of restricted sites. That will force IE to reject the bad code. I was having the same problems and now they're gone.
Procedure:
1. Open menu item: Tools...Internet Options
2. Click “Security” tab
3. Select “Restricted Sites”
4. Click “Sites” button
5. Under “Add this website to this zone”, enter “*.sitemeter.com” without the quotes but with *
6. Click “Add” button
7. Close windows using “Close” or “OK”, not “Cancel”.
After that, and without a restart, Sitemeter’s thwartage is thwarted!

I spent several hours last night and this morning trying to find the problem. I don’t mind the multiple posts.
I thought there was something wrong with my computer when I couldn’t access several political blogs and got weird error messages.
I appreciate the tip on the Restricted Sites. I’ll try that. By the way, the same problem occurs with IE6 too.
Hotair.com and MichelleMalkin.com both had the problem last night, but it seems to be “fixed.” I’m not sure if they temporarily turned off the link to Sitemeter or what they did. I notice that Moonbattery.com has the problem today, but it didn’t have it last night.
I just clicked on the Sitemeter.com home page and read their news. Apparently, they are migrating to a new platform and expect a lot of foul ups over the next few days. One thing they also mentioned is that sites which use the “number of visitors showing option” may experience problems.
Sitemeter wants to go to a uniform “simple logo” while they test their platform changes and to save loading time. Then, once all is set up, they will post new code for showing visitors. If I understand this, the uniform icon will be simple. For those who want to show their count, clicking the icon will give the number. I believe this is maybe why some of the larger blogs are crashing...
I checked a few “local blogs” that are “low traffic” and they are fine on IE 7.
So that’s what was causing me not to be able to see that video posted yesterday about the Democrats objecting to drilling even if it reached $10.00 per gallon...
Sitemeter will be lucky to be in business next week. They knocked thousands of blogs off the internet simply by not testing a major rewrite with IE.
They have neither acknowledged the problem nor fixed it.
It’s not just a problem with IE7. It also affects 5.5sp2.
Thanks. The Instapundit disabled sitemeter yesterday but I couldn’t get into HotAir or the RadioEqualizer. Hope this fixes it.
you can always switch over to Mozilla-Firefox and not use Internet explorer.
Agreed. It’s like they feel they have a copyright on the article. It doesn’t gum up the main board the way they try and exaggerate it.
If you like memory hogging sure. Yes even 3.0 still hogs the memory.
BTW I use FireFox for everything. Just pointing out that it is still a leaky memory hog.

You’re right. Plus, lately, something else that’s really weird. If I have several tabs open, and hit a site with blocked content, cpu goes right through the roof, and FF crashes.

Had to modify my online store last night after several hours of missed sales. Got rid of the Sitemeter script and all runs fine again.
