THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This weekend marks the beginning of August, the month when many Americans take their summer vacation. This year, however, the high price of gas is taking a toll on summer travelers. Congress is now taking a month-long recess of its own. Unfortunately, Democratic leaders are leaving town without taking any action to ease the burden of high gas prices on families across America.
The fundamental source of high gas prices is the fact that supply is not keeping pace with demand. To reduce pressure on prices, we need to increase the supply of oil, especially oil produced here at home. So in June, I called on Congress to lift the legislative ban that prevents offshore exploration of parts of the Outer Continental Shelf, or OCS. But the leaders of the Democratic Congress have refused to allow a vote.
Lifting the ban on this offshore exploration would benefit our economy in two important ways.
First, lifting the ban would allow our Nation to take advantage of a large and reliable source of domestic oil. Experts believe that these restricted areas could eventually produce about 18 billion barrels of oil. That's almost 10 years worth of America's current oil production.
Second, lifting the ban would create new opportunities for American workers and businesses. On Tuesday, I visited the Lincoln Electric Company in Cleveland, Ohio, a business that produces welding products used for offshore exploration. If Congress were to permit this exploration, it would mean new jobs at businesses like Lincoln Electric. American drivers are counting on Congress to lift the ban on offshore exploration, and so are American workers.
Bringing these resources online will take time, and that means that the need for congressional action is urgent. I've lifted the executive restrictions on offshore exploration. This means that the only thing now standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is the United States Congress. The sooner Congress lifts the ban, the sooner we can get this oil from beneath the ocean floor to your gas tank.
We also need to take other essential steps to strengthen domestic oil production. Congress needs to pass legislation that allows us to tap the extraordinary potential of oil shale, permits exploration in currently restricted areas of northern Alaska, and enables the expansion of America's domestic refining capacity.
It appears that the leaders of the Democratically-controlled Congress will let the entire summer pass without voting on any of these vital steps to help reduce pressure on gas prices. This failure to act is unacceptable to me and unacceptable to the American people. So when they return from their summer break, Democratic leaders should show that they've heard the frustration of the American people by allowing a vote on offshore exploration. If Congress does not act, they will owe families across America an explanation for why they're ignoring their concerns.
I know that high energy prices are making this a difficult time for many of our citizens, but it is important to remember that these high prices were not inevitable. They are partially the result of policy choices that have been made over the years by the United States Congress. Now Congress has an opportunity to begin reversing that damage. By opening up new resources at home we can help bring energy costs down. And that will help ensure that our economy remains the strongest, most vibrant, and most hopeful in the world.
Thank you for listening.
[I think WE have to drive the conversation that is just as much about energy INDEPENDENCE as it the price at the pump!]
Are American Citizens made INDEPENDENT by allowing BRITISH Petroleum to loot American Natural Resources?
All they blah, blah are Rino talking points it seems,,,
Some folks don’t care or don’t know how hard the cost of
ENERGY is hitting most Americans!!!
The folks in the north will be hit the worst IMO,,,
Post # 14 speaks for itself,,,
All it’s gunna take is a Katrina size hurricane to cut
through the rigs in the Gulf then it’s GAME OVER,,,
IIRC some Louisiana refineries will switch over to home
heating oil production from motor fuel at the end of this
month,,,(near 80% is produced here),,,
The POTUS knows this better than most !!!
A fact many indeed seem to forget. How can a man with such an extensive family history in the oil business be so blasted blind? Whats good for corporate business is not always good for the future of the United States. As such the presidents focus should not be aimed at corporate profits but rather national security and maintaining our own sovereignty as a nation. Our oil situation certainly falls into that category. We're losing that battle and so called Free Trade is one of the reasons. Drill, mine, squeeze, or compress, ever drop of oil we can domestically.
A Bush never inconvenienced anyone on the federal payroll.
I don’t know what their plan is, but I’ve got an idea to get the ball rolling on this. I don’t think we should wait at all for the summer recess, why not do something about it now? We’ve got a little momentum built up right now, and I say it’s time to take advantage of that.
Here’s my idea:

Hi, don-o
The president has got the message. But from his point of view, not all that much different than Pelosi’s apparently, its better to wait and let the anger and destruction fester before the election, than it is to take executive action and allow Americans the independence, AGAIN, that made this country so great.
That is the crux of the issue isn’t it? Independence versus oppression.
Since when do the powers that be get to tell us what to do?
THEY WORK FOR US.
Only one way to bring that to their attention and that is to fire their sorry butts.
Actually you’re wrong on all accounts, and I certainly haven’t sat on line and WHINED all the time either.
By all means do continue with your ad hominems, but President Bush has done the best thing possible. Tell you what, go buy CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, and then change their formats. Better yet, go change the way Americans watch the news (thirty second sound bytes) and get them out of their conditioned state and then get back to me.
There is not any doubt you do not understand what Conservatives/Republicans are up against here. For the record, I am tired of your hyperbole as well as your ad hominem attacks towards me. My point, you have no clue what I do in the real world.
As for President Bush, after this election, people such as yourself will miss him. You may not admit missing the president, but you know I’m “RIGHT”. This has been rather amusing, but I must prepare for my travels.
For the record, God, Family, Country, those are the order by which I live.
I bid you adieu
Huh? Now and again? Did you mean now and then?
Yes. The House IS closest to the people and I will be on the phone Monday to first ask my Rep Congressman why he was not in that number.
He is touting as a sponsor of a “No Excuses” energy bill. Looks like he would have been there to pump his own bill. We shall see.
You forgot FOX News and Hannity's beloved Rudy Red Dress. Maybe that's why I don't drink the GOP Kool-Aid I don't watch MSM news.
There is not any doubt you do not understand what Conservatives/Republicans are up against here.
I do understand this much. When the GOP ran and acted like Conservatives they won big. However it was stooges like Lott, Hatch, Stevens, Fred Thompson {second term}, Frist, Specter, DOLE, Newt, Malanori, etc who helped destroy that. The GOP won big in 1994 and it ran Conservative. It was given a mandate to go by and promptly dropped it by late 1995. But why?
The GOP had a war internally and the Rockefeller Liberals including later on Bush took over platform. Ones such as Sussie Malanori and Christie Todd Whittman destroyed absolutely any chance whatsoever of a 1996 GOP POTUS win. But doubt you remember the Doctor Bob Dole's Big Tent Freak Show called the 1996 GOP Convention. Then the troubles began and never slowed down. It was a "we must be like the DEMs so they don't win campaigns from then on." Never mind the canidate is a liberal he's Republican was the theme. Those campaigns and backroom deals destroyed the GOP. from within.
George W {Chief Smirking Chimp} Bush will go down in history as the POTUS who wasted a two house majority. Contrast that with Reagan went up against a two house majority and got his way most the time. Now that's LEADERSHIP and Bush's aren't leaders by any stretch. They're McFly's.
As for missing Bush? He's the one who for 8 solid years steered the GOP further into the Liberal's abyss. Look at the choices. Bush buddy and loyal bad policy pack mule McCain for all of Smirking Chimps bad ideas or Obama. Look how far the GOP by going left itself has allowed the left to go further. You wanna tell me this is part of some great insane political strategy on the part of the GOP Leadership?
My point, you have no clue what I do in the real world.
I challenge you on that. The Reagan wins and later the GOP takeovers came not from the Rockefeller Liberal GOP but rather Conservatives whom many had never even heard their names before. A former Nixon aide, a Conservative think tank founder and commentator, a former officer in the Colgate company, and a Virginia preacher started a movement that changed the political course of this nation and got it thinking Conservative for nearly two decades. I doubt you can name even two of them. Mention one of their names a man who has ran for POTUS several times and listen to the hisses of the party elitist who deem him unworthy.
I listen to solid conservatives. Names like John Lofton, Paul Weyrich, Chuck Baldwin, and others. I don't listen to Rush and his 5 times a week ego trip nor Hannity, nor even Savage. Before these Johnny Come Lately's party shill apologist came along we had some real conservatives making real progress. Fox News is so predictable that Mort and Fred have been finishing each others sentences and often agree. Where is a real Conservative on Fox News now? Brit Hume is likely the only one with a prime time slot. FAUX News even got rid of Gibson. But they won't ever loose Rivero and it's funny he shows up the most on the so called conservatives shows.
I've been following the GOP real closely since before the 1996 elections. I watched what was perhaps the one and only ever created Conservative TV Network. That is where I learned we were being SOLD OUT imediately after the 1994 wins. You please explain to me then if the GOP isn't in deep, deep, trouble then how can a man like Trent Lott achieve once again leadership in the senate? I'm waiting on that explanation. I bet you have a good one too {Not}.
Good Republicans I support. Ones like Ron Paul, Duncan Hunter, John J Duncan, and a few others. Ones who will stand on principle even agaiunst the party and POTUS as they have when it needed doing.
Republicans have a warped sense of hero's take former SML Bill Frist for example and his Medicare reform. Do you have even a clue as to where he got his ideas? He stole them from Hillary Clinton in a program used in Tennessee called TENNCARE which Hilary and Gore pushed through. You see I know a lot more than you think. Maybe that's why Conservatives like myself are madder than hell and unwilling to just sit back and take it any longer for the sake of a stinking also liberal party.
One last thing. A bunch of the Republican Congress took a much needed stand in congress Friday. Where was Bush? Why no special session? Is he that afraid of stepping on some corporate buddies or Middle East Thugs toes? If ever a need for Leadership in the White House Friday was the day. BUSH YAWNED INSTEAD!!!!! By tomorrow morning no one will remember a word the Chimp said about drilling. That is the Bush way.
On behalf of President Bush, thank you for your correspondence.
We appreciate hearing your views and welcome your suggestions.
Due to the large volume of e-mail received, the White House cannot respond to every message.
Thank you again for taking the time to write.
HMMM auto reply!
What good would that do? The man is politically inept.
Re-opening the CONUS and off shore of the U.S. to drilling of oil IS A SERIOUS NATIONAL SECURITY MATTER. So serious that if OPEC cuts us off you may not have a return flight home. It is far more important than most anything Bush has addressed and one he's only done token action on. We need more refineries also and defense production self reliance once more. If the one and the only thing that gets passed the rest of the year is that then fine because it's that important. So why isn't Bush pushing for it harder then?
I'm not proud of a POTUS who sat back while good soldiers and Marines fighting in the name of this nation are being Court Martialed for HIS insane ROE's. He can indeed put an end to that as well.
First of all the president is well aware of what needs to be done, and the Democrats were waiting for the President to call a special session so they could use the media to accuse him of stealing the election. Honestly, I do not understand what you do not get on this issue.
The only people I have encountered that are this venomous and hateful are the far left and the ones who support Ron Paul.
Moreover, once again, you have yet to prove a point other than your hate for President G.W. Bush. Go ahead, Vote for Obama, maybe you will be happy then.
As for my tag line, this gal works fervently every single day when dealing with issues related to this country, but it is people such as yourself who claim to be Conservative that is the problem. Your ad hominem attacks have been so noted and will be deleted from this point forward.
On this, I bid you Adieu.
Two PC Points for you for using a DEM tactic of debate :>}
I will say this, your judgementalism gives you away as well as your calling our President a CHIMP?
LOL He makes that face I don't.
The only people I have encountered that are this venomous and hateful are the far left and the ones who support Ron Paul.
I like Ron Paul but I'll vote Chuch Baldwin in November. BTW staunch good record conservatives had stood against Bush on policy some are among the most respected what does it make them?
Moreover, once again, you have yet to prove a point other than your hate for President G.W. Bush
Hate him? No. But I do think that like his Pappy he is a globalist as well as a liberal that was on a GOP ticket two elections. So that in turns stands against almost everything I am for. If the GOP would return to a Conservative platform I'd consider voting for more of their candidates. As far Moderate as I go politically was Reagan. I voted for Poppy even worse I even voted for Bob Viagra Dole. That was the last straight party vote the GOP got from me. Maybe that helps you understand. But you see the Bush's were 180 from Reagan's conservative side. Yes Poppy himself blasted the man during the primaries and Poppy was the biggest mistake Reagan made.
First of all the president is well aware of what needs to be done,
So he does what? Runs to China? For what? Business? We don't need to be in China's Faux Olympics. China stands against everything the Olympics once stood for. Bush's policy on China is yet another reason I do not support many of W's policies. It's a farce and China is doing it for propaganda. Bush's have been China's willing man in corporate America puppets for quite a while now. Oh BTW how can you delete my post?
