I read somewhere recently that the state may consider mandating that all new homes and offices being built must be equipped with thermostats that can be controlled from a remote location.

"Communicating thermostats," and as I recall the proposal went down hard due to the protests.

Not that they won't be back -- similar things are being done by the energy utilities with large commercial outfits. Currently it's by phone, but automated systems are being developed and tested (though it's not being done by fiat but by contractual agreement).

As those who live here in Fresno know, they already do that here..they also photograph your garbage cans to make sure they are in the appropriate place at the appropriate time.
What an admirable job... what do you do daddy? well i go through people’s garbage cans and make sure they have the correct kind of garbage in each one.

I can either pay $25+/month for ONE bin, and carry my trash 3/4 mile to a be picked up; or I can pay $20/TON (scaled & pro rated, no less) to haul it myself when there’s enough to bother with.

Yard waste is free to dump.

Recyclables are also free to drop off.
