IIRC, Algeria was formally part of France during that time, not merely a colony. Which meant Algerians were French citizens. Free to enter `La France Metropole’ as they pleased.

I remember seeing on TV how the Muslim `Secret Army Organization’ terrorized Frenchmen native to Algeria (`les pied-noirs’) until they were forced to flee in 1962.

Islam - never a pretty sight.
