Proposed Army center upsets Middletown neighborhood (CT)

Middletown (WTNH) -- The Army's quest to build a Training Center in Middletown has outraged neighbors living near Boardman Lane.

Representatives for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers say they are surprised by how upset many Middletown homeowners are about the proposed Army facility that would be built on Boardman Lane.

"Typically we are welcomed with open arms in the community," Diane McCartin, of the Army Corps of Engineers, said.

It is for that reason that the Army Corps, as well as the National Guard, hosted a press conference at the Inn at Middletown to provide what they say are facts about the project; not convoluted opinions that stem from emotion.

Officials say the facility will be used for classroom training only, that car traffic will be at a minimum, and the maximum number of personnel on sight will be around 70 people during the week, 400 people during the weekend.

The property owner, of the 88-acre land, says some of the opposition, specifically from a few elected officials, is surprising and offensive.

After Thursday's meeting, officials are hoping residents will now be able to ask questions that are more based on fact than emotion.

What state is this Middletown in? PA? OH? I’m sure there are others.

It's in the title of the thread.

Good luck with that.

Middletown, CT is home of Wesleyan Univ. Wesleyan has a rep of being a place rich parents send their kids who could not get into an Ivy League U. Mini-version of Berkeley. Lots of nuts and fruit cakes.

If I was in that town, I would go to the meeting.

If I owned the property, I’d see about them putting in a little pistol range.

Come to north Texas. We’d love for you to build your training center here.

What possible objection could they have to a Corps of Engineers classroom building?

Let me guess: the Corps isn't going to allow anal sex in there.

If the land for the facility is federal then tell the town to pack it up their arses and build the training center. Once built, only buy supplies from sources outside of Middletown.

Ironic. Years ago I used to go to Middletown to buy army / navy surplus stuff.

Haven't been back since the town has distintegrated into freakish art displays. Remember the nude statues sprinkled around town a couple of years ago?

"....30 new sculptures that have appeared on Main Street downtown, from the North End to Union Street. In particular, many senior citizens have objected to the three pairs of nude male bronzes that stand close to the Senior Center...

"...the day the statues appeared, June 2 (2005). "I thought it was men and women," Dunklee said. "I thought it was Adam and Eve, something like that. I was totally disgusted. I’m against civil unions. Me, I’m without a car; they’re without clothes. When I saw them hugging each other, I was total disgusted."

"....sculptor’s intention. "There is nothing erotic about these pieces. The art is very sincere. There is no connection with any sexuality whatsoever. They’re nothing to do with sexuality, they’re just naked."

Yeah, right. A very sincere hippie protester's campground junkyard on the road to Gomorrah.
