For the record, significant Chinese immigration to Canada began in the mid 18th century with the gold rush and the building of the Trans-Canadian railroad. No one has any idea whether the murderer is a recent arrival or a many generational Chinese-Canadian. The first ever Chinese arrived in Canada in 1788 and worked in the British Columbian ship building industry. Also Uyghers do not have Han Chinese names.

I speculate that it could easily be both: methamphetamine, mental imbalance and blades go together often.

With a name like Li, I’d speculate Mainland China, recent immigrant. Chinese immigration has been a great thing for Canada, on balance. They tend to make excellent immigrants, they settle in well, and after a generation max they fully assimilate. And they do the same in NZ.
