Have you been around guns much? If not then the unfamiliarity can cause confusion. Here in my home they are as common as the can opener. I am rarely more than ten foot from a firearm. They are all kept clean, loaded and ready for use.
In other words, it would be stranger if they were not obvious rather than the opposite. My wife and I both conceal carry and my now grown children are proficient in their use.
If you spent some time in this environment you would understand why we never go on killing sprees any more than we go on can opening sprees.
