A rookie cop - the son of a highly respected New York City detective - has been stripped of his badge and gun after being caught on video viciously attacking a bicyclist who was part of a Times Square demonstration. '
The startling YouTube video shows Officer Patrick Pogan, 22, apparently setting his sights on - and then tackling - a bicyclist as he pedaled along Seventh Avenue as part of last Friday's controversial Critical Mass ride.
Christopher Long, 29, was among a throng of riders as he whizzed toward the corner of West 46th Street at 9:30 p.m. and appeared to try and swerve away from the officer.
But the video shows Pogan pick up his pace as he stares down Long before shoving the cyclist, slamming him to the pavement.
To the dismay of stunned pedestrians, Long, who was not wearing a helmet, hurtles several feet through the air as he flips off the bicycle and lands on the curb.

Read much?
Pogan says bike boy tried to run him down. The video proves he’s a lying POS. Pogan never says he witnessed the guy commit some infraction and tried to get him to stop. So yeah, it is inconsistant.
The whole story isn't in the article.
BOTH cops moved on the biker, as though they saw him do something that we didn't get to see, and that he needed to be stopped.
The cop’s report is in the article!!!
He says bike boy tried to run him down!
The video proves he lied in his report.
As a private individual, I would have lauded him knocking one of these idiot critical masser's d*cks in the dirt. As a uniformed officer, I expect more self control or find yourself a different job...
I read the policeman's official court filing of the incident. He makes no mention of "what went on before" though I'm sure if he knew of the video, he would have made something up. All the things he claims occured in the interaction between himself and the cyclist is demonstrably untrue.
I'll try not to offend you with an irrational or emotional response, but the cop's a lying sack.
I certainly have a hard time figuring out who to root for (or against) in this confrontation but that cop closed the gap and launched on this guy. As a matter of fact he very clearly could have killed him.
I can’t really see a guy wanting to bust up a $500 bike and take all the ass-beatings he is going to get by trying to hit a cop. Did you see the size of that cop? I don’t see him being intimidated by a tree-hugger on a bicycle.
The only way to make this a case of assault on the cop is to kind of squint and hold your head sideways while rapidly shaking your monitor.
Think much?
Long DID try to hit him at one point.
‘Course, you can always believe Ryan, the Critical Mass a**wipe, if you want to (and it appears you do).
As I said, the rider may very well have done something we didn't get to see.
The police report simply confirms my suspicions
Are you sure? It looks like the bicyclist must have hit a patch of oil and was falling. The cop, doing his duty to protect and serve the citizens of New York City, was merely trying save the lives of innocent bystanders as well as that awkward bicyclist by trying to catch him before he hit the pavement or worse, the children in the crowd. Unfortunately, the unsafe speed at which the bicyclist was traveling caused both the negligent bicyclist and the kind officer to fall to the ground. Fortunately, the heroic efforts of the police officer saved many bystanders from serious injury. I'm pretty certain that fine outstanding public servant deserves a medal for his quick thinking and heroic actions!
If he wasn't so green the cop might have come up with a better lie, like saying he told the guy to stop, the guy didn't listen, so he stopped him himself.
Your broad comment about Freepers general contempt for bicyclists is unfounded.

I dunno. 240 posts in the following thread, and I daresay not too many of them are generally positive of bike riders.

I don’t know the layout, but is it possible that he was trying to be a “corker” (see the Wikipedia article on Critical Mass) and the cop stopped him?
If he did something then the cop would have put that in his report instead of lying and saying the guy tried to run him down, leaving out his tackle of the biker.
Watch the video again. Looks to me like Long did lean toward the cop an instant before Pogan hit him.
Only Pogan saw Long’s face and so is in the best position to interpret Long’s intentions.
Wait for it to go to court. The truth will out.
Except that in the beginning of the video, it is clear that all traffic is completely stopped, while the annoying bicyclists pass.
Plus, the cop is proven to be a liar in every claim he makes that can be confirmed or disproved by the events on the video.
Why do you bend over backwards to believe the cop, when he's proven to be a liar?
We don’t know if he was a ‘Corker’, but it would fit the whole situation.
Corker:Because Critical Mass takes place without an official route or sanction, participants practice a tactic known as “corking” in order to maintain the cohesion of the group. This tactic consists of a few riders blocking traffic from side roads so that the mass can freely proceed through red lights without interruption.
Corking allows the mass to engage in a variety of activities, such as forming a cyclone, lifting their bikes in a tradition known as a “Bike Lift” (in Chicago this is referred to as a Chicago hold-up), or to perform a “die-in” where riders lie on the ground with their bikes to symbolise cyclist deaths and injuries caused by automobiles, very popular in Montreal.
Because it's not clear that he in fact IS lying about the Leftist stopping traffic.
Yeah I don’t think so.
The truth is out. The biker will have all charges dropped against him. The cop will get some kinda suspension and learn to become a better liar.
Still, it was a nice hit. That biker boy was JACKED UP!
He did. We just have an editors version of the report, not the report itself.
