ANWR: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Dakota Voice ^ | 7/23/2008 | Bob Ellis

Posted on 07/29/2008 8:40:39 AM PDT by GKar975

Republican U.S. House of Representatives candidate Chris Lien visited several areas of Alaska last week including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

He went with six other House candidates: Luke Puckett of Indiana, Mike Sodrel of Indiana, Greg Goode of Indiana, Jason Chafets of Utah, Paul Stark of Wisconsin, and Craig Williams Pennsylvania.

I met with Lien at his campaign office in Rapid City yesterday where he showed me some of the pictures he took on the trip.

Several of those pictures are featured below because, as they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words." This is even more true of the oil issue in ANWR, since a lot of misinformation and misrepresentation is presented by opponents.

For more pics, see Dakota Voice.

Oil exploration and transmission is not always pretty and there are mishaps such as the Exxon Valdez.

Accidents such as the Exxon Valdez are rare and CANNOT be attributed to the oil companies. If you want an example of where oil drilling and transportation technology is today, look at Katrina. Several oil rigs near the Louisiana coast were ripped from their moorings by that storm and not a drop of oil was spilled. THAT'S the current state of oil extraction and transportation today, NOT tired examples using the Exxon Valdez.

Herds of little executive jets and jet-props have been flying over the house the past couple weeks. I assume they are carrying oil tycoons and politicians to NPR-A and Deadhorse/ANWR to make massive and secret business deals.

It’s been overcast and raining/drizzling all summer and the gardens are three weeks behind. If the sun were out the glare off the immaculately polished Halliburton exec jet would be blinding.

I didn't realize the old pipeline terminated as close to the ANWR exploration areas as it does.

That makes shipment easy and fast - particularly when you consider the “it will take ten years to develop ANWR” argument ASSUMES that it will be drilled only 3 months a year - at the worst weather of north Alaska's midwinter.

I've been watching this show Ice Road truckers on the History channel about truck drivers driving on the iced over rivers in Alaska at temps -40F. How they can build stuff up there is beyond my comprehension.

Notice: typos have increased dramatically since Bill Gates retired. It is his little joke: an undocumented Windows feature that changes your keystrokes according to a Word algorithm implemented two weeks ago as BG left the office for the last time.

Any port in a storm I guess; or any pool on a balmy day.

Oil exploration and transmission is not always pretty and there are mishaps such as the Exxon Valdez. The point is that it has to be done safely.

That is not the point at all. Drilling in ANWR isn't being blocked by any real concerns for the environment or that is what the enviro-weenies would talk about. Instead they talk about the "pristine environment filled with wildlife" which isn't exactly true. They speak of disrupting the mating of caribou which isn't true at all. They talk about the beauty of "the mountains" when the only mountains are many miles away.

And then there is the factual record that spills from drilling are very rare. And that human spills of petroleum are dwarfed by natural seepage. When the truth is examined environmental concerns have no significant point at all.

A week ago two moose calves were born in the yard. Can’t imagine anything cuter. Momma was spooky, got to say, but the calves were frisky, looking at everything, staying within sight of Mom. You could pick one up yourself they were so small.

Did I post something that was false or inaccurate?

My point, as I clearly wrote is that E&P as well as transmission requires a great deal of precaution or you end up with a disaster such as the Exxon Valdez.

Unfortunately, E&P of ANWR opposed by both Obama and McCain.
