Four-dollar-a-gallon gas has done something that few Republicans thought possible just a few months ago: given them hope.
United behind a renewed push for offshore oil drilling, Republican members of Congress and the party's presumptive presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain, think they have found their best political issue of the 2008 campaign.
McCain strategists and GOP leaders on Capitol Hill say the issue, which polls suggest Americans favor by healthy margins, lets Republicans demonstrate their plans to address the anger over high gas prices as well as the broader economic distress that many voters feel.
Because most Democrats, including Sen. Barack Obama, are opposed to increased drilling, McCain and the GOP have already begun casting their rivals as unconcerned about gas prices and unwilling to wean the country from foreign oil.

Amazing... some Americans love to bend over and take it in the wallet..
Precisely my idea of fighting the Dem's. I wish President Bush will come out swinging (since he has no dog in this fight; no re-election issue) and lay bare ALL the facts about energy shortage.
The Congress's inability and/or unwillingness to lift the heavy handed bans and outmoded restrictions on Off shore drilling, nuclear power plants, tar and oil shale development etc., etc.. The advantages of using our OWN resources puts us in a far better position to stave off OPEC"s domination over our dependability of crude oil.
Did I mentioned that, some, if not all, the radicals wishing the death of America are subsidized by our very own money to the tune of +750 Billion Dollars yearly, courtesy of our Saudi "friends"?.
What's wrong to be independent of oil imports?...and do not give me this environment/green horse sh!t!
I loved Krauthammer’s advise the other day on “Special Report”. Said Bush should call a special session in August, then have a “fireside chat” with the American public explaining the deal about drilling, etc. and tell them that it is the dims holding it up and then call for a vote.
Cahrles Krauthammer said that on “Special Report” the other day...
I concur!!!! Bush should hold nothing back and go out with a bang. Get all of these scumbag Rats on record as not giving a crap about the American people, but rather more concerned about the caribou. Pubs win in a landslide in Nov. BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Republicans need an “Energy Contract With America” that they can present to the American Voters. If they can lay out a solid plan, I think the results in Nov. can be spectacular. I’ve said for months that this was an issue that has been handed to the Republicans on a silver platter.
Bringing up the years of Democrat blocking and stalling of energy production should be the first and last thing out of the mouth of every Republican who steps up to a microphone between now and November.
DRILL HERE! DRILL NOW! PAY LESS!

It’s not just the cost. This is a national security issue.
It makes no sense to be giving billions of dollars to enemies of the United States. Our no drill policy is suicide, plain and simple.
The #1 issue is still WINNING THE WAR ON TERROR !
++++++++++++++++++++++
Not possible with our present no drill policy. We’re arming our enemies. We’re contributing to our own destruction.
Bush made some comments about drilling at home and released areas for drilling and the price started dropping over-night. Literally.
Now we are being told that the price at the pump has dropped because we are using less. I don't believe one word of that because the price is based on worldwide use.
I think the price went down with the talk of drilling at home in the US.
They can't give Bush any credit--IMO.
I think you just wrote an excellent campaign commercial :-)
There are no winning issues, least of all this one.
Isn’t that the truth.
It has been 28 years since he left office. Many do not know.
Who needs history lessons when it's all socially constructed anyway?
“It has been 28 years since he left office. Many do not know.”
true..but the older voters are more numerous, and more reliable with turnout.
Also...if it can be managed to have some historical lessons in some of the ads -especially on u-tube -younger voters might be inspired to read up on it.
Change we can believe in? really?
Americans already rejected that kind of “change” in 1980 - by a landslide.
Do we really need to learn that lesson again the hard way?
