"If people who are cognitively disabled can be dehydrated to death, then the lives of many people with cognitive disabilities will be directly threatened when they experience significant health problems," Schadenberg worries. Exactly!

Once you have met a few people who were “in a coma” or in a “vegetative state” and then saw them as they woke up and got up, and learned to walk and talk and dance and sing again, it makes you question the wisdom of the brain scans that “prove” the person is not ever going to wake up. And these people, when they do wake up, can tell you everything that was said in their room while they were “in a coma”

Something is not right here. A public guardian?
My suspicion is that the patient is on the public dole.

He said he's worried that euthanasia advocates are pushing killing patients, even those like Rivera whose conditions aren't as difficult as others. IOW, if the euthanasia advocates have their way we can rid ourselves of pesky sick relatives by means of starvation and dehydration instead of an injection of drugs the way we would euthanize a sick or injured pet cat. Great, now we don't have to worry about what to do with Grandma when she gets old and hard to care for, we just turn her over to the hospital and they will take it from there with the blessings of the state.
Hey wait just a doggone minute, if we can handle Grandma that way my kids could handle me that way too.
