Randy Pausch, noted CMU prof, succumbs to cancer
Pittsburg Post Gazette ^ | 7/25/08 | Eleanor Chute

Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon University computer science professor whose final lecture inspired millions, has died of pancreatic cancer.

Dr. Pausch, 47, who turned the lecture into a book, said that no one would have been interested in his words of wisdom were he not a man in his 40s with a terminal illness, leaving behind a wife and three young children.

According to Dr. Pausch's Web site, a biopsy last week revealed that the cancer had progressed further than expected, based on recent PETscans.

Very sad. I still get chills watching his lecture.

And please, no "WTH is Randy Pausch and why should I care" comments. Read the article.

May he rest in peace, and may his family find grace sufficient to ease the pain of his passing.

But we don't beat the Reaper by living longer. We beat the Reaper by living well,

Fine words indeed

Very sad. I read his book and have been following his fight. Just a couple days ago I checked the website and wondered why there was no update since June. Now I know. He left a great legacy. God bless Jai and her kids and the rest of the family. I’m glad she is living near her own family.

The good professor was last seen punching the Reaper in the throat as he was carried away.

I hope I die as well.

What sad news - I have enormous respect for the man and feel my brother just died. I included him in my prayers after watching the Last Lecture.

RIP Randy and peace to his family, especially his wife and three young children.

This is so sad! My daughter-in-law bought Randy Pausch’s DVD and book for all of us after she watched his lecture, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”. It is absolutely amazing.

Randy accepted his cancer diagnosis as a challenge and talked about how he lived his childhood dreams, with humor and amazement. Randy wanted to leave his children this DVD, to talk to them as they grew up, as a guide for life, since he would not be here in person to guide them. His book talks about how he came to give the lecture.

Randy moved his family from Virginia, away from a home, friends and neighborhood his wife loved, so she would be surrounded by her family while she raised their children alone.

This DVD of Randy’s lecture is so uplifting and a wonderful message to all of us. I felt honored to be able to watch him—great sense of humor and terrific delivery. Our prayers are with Randy’s wife Jai, their 3 young children, all his family and those who loved Randy Pausch.

Such a great loss, two wonderful men, Tony Snow and Randy Pausch. Men who were a Blessing to so many of us. May God Rest their souls and comfort their families.

I feel so sorry for him and for his family. He was so brave but you could see how devastated he was knowing he would leave them. His lecture is so worth watching. I knew this was coming soon, just didn’t know when.

He seemed like a great man. I did think, however, that the article that the Post-Tribune originally wrote about the lecture was better than the lecture itself. I think it was hyped up so much that I expected much more.

He did the lecture for his kids and I think viewing it in that context made it even more moving to me.

Per the word of the Lord, we don’t beat the reaper by living well, but only by accepting the the gift of God’s grace, the redemptive death of Jesus Christ. In what little I read of Randy Pausch, when asked, he said he would not seek God. A good man perhaps, but truly a man of this world...an Ophrah humanist.
