The Balkan situation is so screwy that the Germans & Austrians hate Serbs with a passion because the Germans & Austrians are (nominally) Catholic and ally with the Croats or whoever (Muslims) is fighting the Eastern Orthodox Serbs. And Germany is the prime NATO & EU power

The USA is the prime NATO power.

This Catholic German animus against Orthodox Serbs is centuries old.

Germans are as Lutheran as they are Catholic, and the German government - headquartered in the capital of Lutheran Prussia - is the heir of the Lutheran state of Bismarck, not the Catholic state of Metternich.

Austria has no appreciable influence on NATO's councils.

And, in plain reality, about 10% of Serbs are practicing Orthodox Christians and maybe 15% of Germans of practicing Catholics.

This doesn't have much to do with either Germany or religion. It has to do with the USA and UK's view of regional stability and the fact that Serbian nationalism is a useful chesspiece for a belligerent neo-Soviet Russia.
