From the New Republic: "Old Flame: Why I still kinda like John McCain.

The presidential election has an oddly placid feel to it. Four years ago, the notion that George W. Bush would get another four years in office, actually ratified by a plurality of the voters, was more than any liberal could bear, and, after the election, there was loose talk everywhere about "Jesusland" and wanting to flee to Canada. This time, even though Democrats are extremely enthusiastic about Barack Obama, that life-and-death quality is absent. I think the reason is that a lot of liberals kind of like John McCain. I know I do.

Any candidate liberals admit to liking is a bad candidate.

Of course liberals like the liberal McCain. He's been banking on capturing a large number of such people's votes.

It's too bad they have a better liberal to vote for in Obama, because McCain sure has PO’d the conservatives most Republican candidates could have counted on.

Enjoy your mess, “Lame McCain.”

I had much more positive feelings about Liberals when I thought they might actually leave the U.S. But they’re like Herpes, they never really leave.

I think he’s speaking more about personal animus.

I can’t stand virtually all of Obama’s positions BUT I don’t have contempt for him. I think I would like him if I knew him personally.

That’s opposed to Clinton, Gore, and Kerry who I hold in contempt at every possible level.

The man is a hero, in a world sorely lacking in heroes. I’d like and admire the guy regardless of his politics, though I wouldn’t vote for him if I didn’t like his politics.

Ya know, "Chait" is the way we pronounce Sh!t in three syllables here in Texas.

Re: I think I would like him if I knew him personally.

Gadzooks! Have you... been listening to what he wants to do to our nation?

Barrack nObama is just as dangerous as any terrorist there is in this world. And he will get millions of Americans killed if he is elected.

That is the kind of guy you could like if you knew him personally?

They like him. Not enough to vote for him, but they like him.

I don’t like McCain. I like Obama even less.

You are kidding me?! I can't stand Obama's guts. Anyone who lies through his teeth day in, day out, and supports/cheer-leads what is effectively evil, i.e. abortion, Marxist slavery, hate of country, etc. is my sworn enemy.

The presidential election has an oddly placid feel to it...

For starters, I misread "placid" as "flacid"...

But I guess that really sums up my opinion of it all.

Nothing to get excited about, here, except to reject the most unacceptable.

This isn't an election folks, it is the political equivalent of a fraternity pig roast.

So what happens when you have a longstanding tradition of chosing the 'lesser evil'? Well, your lesser evils get....more evil.

You drift far away from the course those who started this journey intended for this Republic, into the dangerous waters of statism, Socialism, and unchecked centralized power, wielded at the behest and to the benefit of an elite and self-annointed class of people and their close lackeys, and to the detriment of us all.

Even the press, smug with self-importance and and beaming with reflected celebrity from the spotlights they wield, has abandoned virtue in favor of being the snake oil minstrels of the new hucksterism.

Maybe I could hop on the bandwagon, wave a flag, chant a well-rehearsed "rah-rah" for the team, but dang it all, someone put alum in my Kool-Aid.
