The bottom line is that what Savage said is insensitive, harsh and lacking in any compassion. But he’s essentially correct. All autistic kids need extra attention, but most of it is the attention of time and disclipline which a loving parent or caring teacher could deliver. A minimal amount of medication can also be helpful, but not in the frequencies and quantities pushed by the “funky kid” industry. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can’t argue with that..............

I could argue a bit. The traditional ideas of discipline often don't work very well with autistic kids. In order to modify behaviors, positive reinforcement is a zillion times more effective than punishment. In fact punishment often escalates things to the point where both parent and child are near losing control. We chose not to medicate, and found that repetition and reward worked best. Still, we lived thru four hour tantrums for a long time until we realized how much of the problem was a communication problem that required us to tune in to his way of seeing the world in order to teach him ours.

Don't see where you are arguing with the statement. Time and discipline takes many different forms.
