Michael Savage, the incendiary radio host who last week characterized nearly every autistic child as a brat who hasnt been told to cut the act out, said in a telephone interview Monday morning that he stood by his remarks and had no intention of apologizing to those advocates and parents who have called for his firing over the matter.
My main point remains true, Mr. Savage, whose radio audience ranks in size behind only those of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, said in an interview on Monday. It is an overdiagnosed medical condition. In my readings, there is no definitive medical diagnosis for autism.
On his program lastWednesday, Mr. Savage suggested that 99 percent of the cases of autism were a result of lax parenting. He told his audience: They dont have a father around to tell them, Dont act like a moron. Youll get nowhere in life. He added, Straighten up. Act like a man. Dont sit there crying and screaming, idiot.
Asked Monday if he actually believed that 99 out every 100 cases of autism was misdiagnosed, Mr. Savage conceded that figure was a little high. It was hyperbole, he said.
But he said he was proud to have prodded discussion on the subject, and planned to give over his entire show on Monday broadcast live from northern California from 3 to 6 p.m. Pacific time to parents and other callers who wished to disagree with him, and to educate him.

Now, now. The needle shouldn't go in that far.
Looks like Checkers is at it again
Even some girls barely escape being pigeonhold as autistic. I’m one of them.
AMEN!!!! "High-functioning autism" is an oxymoron. If they truly have autism, they aren't functioning well at all, which is sad and heartbreaking because with this so-called "autism spectrum" people get the wrong impression of autism that it's just annoying or inconvenient rather than truly incapacitating.
What fascinates me about his success is that it proves there are a lot of people with attitudes similar to his who seem to enjoy listening to him because they like hearing him abuse callers and call powerful people names. He is in reality what critics wrongly call Rush Limbaugh, someone who works on the worst impulses of his followers who seem to be very angry folks who decide their political positions on emotion rather than intellect.
Generally, I would agree with your post.
I would also add that he has an entertaining show, and he knows how to stir the pot. After all, it’s just a radio show;infotainment.
I agree, but it’s alarming to me how many folks I’ve met who get all their political points of view from listening to Savage. It’s almost as bad as folks who listen exclusively to NPR, thinking they’re getting the “real” news.
I have Tourettes syndrome, you @#*!!
You’re a smug moron. Go hug a cactus plant or something, you natural health freak.
The problem with you and Donna is that you’re members of a cult and if one doesn’t adopt your religion, you condemn them. You sound like Scientologists.
The funny thing is, if a child REALLY has autism, then Savage obviously wasn't directing his comments to those children. Many of the "offended" seemed to have illogically skipped over that part of his argument entirely, and instead, became defensive, as if they somehow knew he was talking about their child or a child they know. Why is that?
It'd be like if he said "99% of moderately fat people are fat because they eat too much of a high fat diet, not because of a glandular problem," and then having people with a TRUE glandular problem go ballistic over what he said. Why get angry over something he said if you truly don't believe it applies to your situation? Makes no sense at all.
It has gotten to the point of where we have a conditional freedom of speech. We have the freedom of speech, as long as NO ONE is made uncomfortable or offended by what is said...
Accepting such mysteries and going forward in faith is very often rewarded by the wondrous revelation and understanding which underlies the mystery in ensuing years and time. And you can look back and see the wonderful pattern the Lord has woven, and why, and to what purpose.
I’m glad you escaped the label, and therefore a long involved process which didn’t apply to you, Tamar1973.
Savage is course and direct. I confess to channel surfing on the radio and listening to Savage until he goes over the deep end or rants against other conservative hosts. Then I remember to change the channel back.
Savage's best phrase is still "Liberalism is a mental disorder".
The same thing can be said of those who only listen to rush or levin or hannity or beck or doyle, etc. etc. etc. etc.
Spot on!
My son is “genuinely Autistic”, and I am going ballistic. My son is twenty years old, 6’3 1/2” and 324 pounds. He is not on any medication for his Autism, either.I would LOVE for Mr.Savage to meet him.
I don’t know why any of you believe that parents would “fake” their child’s Autism, ( as if you could). You don’t “get money” for having a kid with Autism.
Let me just say, Be Careful!! Life, or G-d sometimes has a funny way of teaching you things. Autism is actually a reality...even if there is no blood test for it. Lots of people have family members with it. It doesn’t know or care what political party you belong to or what nationality you are. You may just find out the very hard way how wrong Michael Savage is.
