Savage Stands by Autistic Remarks
NEW YORK TIMES ^ | July 21 08 | JAQUES STEINBERG

Posted on 07/21/2008 11:23:49 AM PDT by camerakid400

Michael Savage, the incendiary radio host who last week characterized nearly every autistic child as “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out,” said in a telephone interview Monday morning that he stood by his remarks and had no intention of apologizing to those advocates and parents who have called for his firing over the matter.

“My main point remains true,” Mr. Savage, whose radio audience ranks in size behind only those of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, said in an interview on Monday. “It is an overdiagnosed medical condition. In my readings, there is no definitive medical diagnosis for autism.”

On his program lastWednesday, Mr. Savage suggested that “99 percent of the cases” of autism were a result of lax parenting. He told his audience: “They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.“ He added, “Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”

Asked Monday if he actually believed that 99 out every 100 cases of autism was misdiagnosed, Mr. Savage conceded that figure was “a little high.” “It was hyperbole,” he said.

But he said he was proud to have prodded discussion on the subject, and planned to give over his entire show on Monday — broadcast live from northern California from 3 to 6 p.m. Pacific time — to parents and other callers who wished to disagree with him, and to educate him.

Many of these replies are yet another example of an issue being pushed aside and the person expressing an opinion is made the "issue."

.. and who's using this disgusting patented liberal devious tactic? People most of whom condemn Savage for being liberal. Go figure.

I can see that fighting off the "Fairness Doctrine" is going to be much more difficult than I feared.

Here's my two cents on this of yours:

’m sure parents of “autistic” children will go ballistic. But there are also a lot of parents who willingly accept their kids being doped up with Ritalin. And they support that too.

Those parents of genuinely autistic children will not go ballistic. But those parents who aren't entirely convinced their child is autistic will.

If you weren’t offended personally by Savage’s comments, then i wasn’t talking to you. :)

Jeez, this is just an idiotic statement.

I've known literally hundreds of autistic children over the years, and for him to seriously believe that you can just yell some sense into them or tell them to act like a man is jaw-dropping.

I never listened much to Savage anyway (mostly during commercial breaks for Mark Levin.) He's bombastic and idiotic. I will continue to not listen.

But he's essentially correct. All autistic kids need extra attention, but most of it is the attention of time and disclipline which a loving parent or caring teacher could deliver. A minimal amount of medication can also be helpful, but not in the frequencies and quantities pushed by the "funky kid" industry.

I agree with you; but rather than drug the children, I'd support other non-medicinal venues. Drugging children that young in age can permanently harm cranial processes.

Egads, now even Benadryl is suspect in that regard. And so are a zillion other over the counter drugs considered "harmful" to young childrens brains. How much more so would a non-over-the-counter drug be?

Whose to say which is “genuine”? The profession has deservedly become mistrusted by many. That's too bad for those truly afflicted.

They’re pigeonhold so the drug companies, schools, etc. make a few $$$ off them.

I have an autistic child. He cost the school district lots of money for extra services and has never taken drugs for his condition. Could you explain which drug is prescribed to treat autism? I am rather well educated on the subject and am aware of none. Some children within the autism spectrum may be treated for anxiety or depression, but they would be prescribed these drugs in spite of the underlying condition.

I think it’s so strange the posters here who have an autistic child or know one and therefore Michael Savage can go straight to hell, when he is obviously talking about not only someone else, but a different kind of someone else,
Touchy touchy!

Get real, he’s obviously not talking about your child or you as a parent!

The profession wouldn't be mistrusted were it sensible. It's allowed the money grubbing to take over the industry. That's not the fault of "the people".

It's no different than all those false allegations of "RAPE"! It scuttles those who've been raped. All those overcharges of RACISM; do the same.

The little grouplets who cry Wolf are making things worse for those who are genuinely in need. Always have, always will.

It is always strange in the make believe world of the internet just how many people did this or did that, have iq’s of immense proportions, are desirable to the opposite sex, are instrumental in politics, how many people are afflicted with this that and the other thing, how rich they are, how smart they are, and.... how many know someone or have a child that is autistic is just another mind boggling example. I am just wowed by the crowd here sometimes. lmao. Make believe is fun!

Risperdal helps some kids with the rages. But with autism meds are hit & miss.

Follow the money and the new gravy train is the fashionable fad of Autism. Sadly, the new fad is really hurting those very few that are truly afflicted. Meanwhile, the drumbeat of medicating our children to the new change drives on with support coming from all circles.... Hop aboard the train folks. Responsibility for raising your children will soon be somebody else’s problem.

True statement. Many are seeing the needs of those that are truly afflicted getting pushed aside for those children from bad parenting. follow the money. Sad.
