PARIS (AFP) - French nuclear safety authorities said Friday that a broken pipe at a nuclear fuel plant in southeast France had caused a radioactive leak but no damage to the environment.

The latest uranium spill at the plant run by nuclear giant Areva in Romans-sur-Isere came amid much public concern over a leak at another facility last week that polluted the local water supply.

The FBFC plant produces nuclear fuel for some of France's 58 reactors, the world's largest network after the United States and which produces 80 percent of the nation's electricity.

I guess that means we in the U.S. produce the greatest quantity of nuked electrons. Not the greatest percentage but the greatest quantity.

Hey, Greenpeace, don’t you have to go protest France’s nuclear plants, since they produce more than 80% of their power from such “death traps”?

France will always be second until they discover air-conditioning.

I know you're kidding and at the risk of sounding pedantic, electric power generation doesn't produce electrons, it just moves them around. And electrons moved by nuclear fired generators are indistinquishable from electrons moved by solar cells, hydro or any other method of generation.

don’t let nan hear about this or she will tell us how unsafe it would be to build more nuke power plants.

Yup! It’s starting. I’ve seen a smattering of these type stories lately. I just put “nukeoops” as a keyword to maybe get a handle on how these stories increase. I also expect to see “The China Syndrome” replayed on TV with some frequency.
