"I'm honored to be with you in a week that reminds us just how far we've come as a country," she said. "Five years ago today, the Supreme Court delivered justice with the decision in Lawrence v. Texas that stated that same-sex couples would never again be persecuted through the use of federal alarm."
While Obama, 44, spoke about gay rights, she also praised her husband and explained why she stands firmly behind him. She described the presidential hopeful's idea of the gap between "the world as it is and the world as it should be." These two worlds, she said, should be "one and the same."
"Barack has made crystal clear his commitment to ensuring full equality for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) couples," she said. "The world as it is should be one that rejects discrimination of all kinds."
