If I were a sheriff I’d tell them that their protests at funerals fall outside the 1st Amendment because of the fighting words exemption, tell them I would arrest them for disorderly conduct and anything else I could think of if they showed up and then say “Sue me.”

I think I’d win.

I think not.

If you were a sheriff I would tell you to check with your municipality's insurance carrier. I suspect the first thing said insurance company would say to you is: “NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!”

You'd be setting up a big payday for the Phelps’ with a flagrant violation of their civil rights. How do you think they get the money to make these trips?

If you doubt me, ask yourself the question, "Why hasn't some sheriff done this to them already/"

Yeah, well, David Koresh called himself Jesus Christ too, doesn’t mean that is the proper label for him.

A true fundamentalist Christian follows the fundamentals taught by Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ went to a funeral, and cried, because he hurt for his friends, who thought their brother was dead. Even though Jesus knew that Lazarus was going to get up out of that grave, he still cried, when he saw his friend’s heartache. He grieved with them. That is a fundamental principal of our faith. Also, God was angry with the friends of Job, who came and sat with him, and taunted him and mocked him for being a sinner.

Jesus also told us clearly that many would come in His name, and call him “Lord”, but that he didn’t know them. By their “fruits” you shall know if they belong to Christ.

Phelps and his followers, produce rotten fruit. Stir up controversies, and feed hate. None of which are the fundamentals of the Christian faith.

Well, I guess we need to protect the family from the vile press as well. And the Democrats. It is disgusting the horrible things they are saying about Tony. How do we shield the family from that?

“How do we shield the family from that?”

OPINION:

You don’t. You show them how evil they are.
You let them know evil is global.
You tell them how much you love your family
and that God loves them, too.

You tell them you will always try to protect them
and will teach them to protect themselves, too.

CLARIFICATION for lurkers

“...how evil they are...” refers to the Westboro “church” protesters.

Knowing Tony, he will be praying for them in heaven.

Dear Lord, please preserve the dignity of this service for the sake of Tony's family, and work mightily in the Phelps family to bring them to their knees in full submission to You. In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

not demon possessed...just mentally unstable and miserable as all get out. Tony would just laugh.

Fred himself suffers from dementia, and anyone who has seen that documentary Fall from Grace, that has aired on Showtime and The Movie Channel, would see that Fred and his bunch are all mentally unstable. Two of his kids left the church and offered interviews on that documentary, and one of them said that the only people who attend Westboro are Fred and his immediate family.

Wonder how Phelps picks and chooses whose common soldiers' funerals to picket? How do he and his minions get there, if they must travel across half the country? Does he have his own Learjet? How far is Topeka from KCI, if he flies commercial?

Tony, I look forward to seeing you up there. Fred, I doubt if I will (nor do I want to).

These people are “EVIL”. They are the opposite side of the Wright bunch. There are always extremes on both sides.

And to picket Tony’s Funeral, they are SICK!

Tony was a wonderful man who LOVED GOD, FAMILY and COUNTRY!

This link is to the most extensive information I’ve seen on the Phelps family. Quite long, but well worth the read. There is simply no excuse for our “justice” system not having locked this guy away decades ago.

Fear like that is why the ACLU manages to intimidate school systems that are way, way on the right side of the law.

It’s time for somebody to make a stand.

Our First Amendment rights are not governed by and abridged at some sheriff’s whim. There are consequences, bad ones, to those who overstep the bounds of their authority. The Phelps family are unutterably vile people, but they understand the rules, unlike you. To them an LEO who does what you suggest is a big payday, just like a pigeon is a Happy Meal on wings to a hawk.

You don’t kill the monsters by feeding them.

Here's an idea:

The Topeka Capital-Journal and WIBW could report a fake obituary about some soldier whose last wish was to be buried in the impact zone at Fort Riley. When the tards show up to protest the "funeral," the 1-161 FA could do a battalion time-on-target fire mission. With white phosphorus. Wouldn't that be fun?

Our First Amendment rights are not governed by and abridged at some sheriff’s whim.

The first amendment guarantees the gov't may not abridge his right to express but does not guarantee a particular venue. Mr Phelps can plaster his hate all over the internet and on the front page of any paper who will publish his ad. There is no indication of a right to disrupt a funeral. Rev Phelps will get his punishment directly from Jesus Christ, who's gospel Phelps distorts.
