The typical reader of The New Yorker may see this as a pro-Obama cover, meant to reassure them that he's still an OK guy, despite the FISA vote and waffling on some other issues.

I think its an American flag burning in the fire place. Plus Osama’s framed picture hangs over the fire place. Pretty juvenile, something a 14 year old could draw.
