At least eight US soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan in clashes with Taleban militants.
US commander Daniel Dwyer told the BBC the soldiers had been killed in clashes in the north-east of the country.
The BBC's Martin Patience in Kabul says it is one of the biggest single losses in a day for the coalition since the start of military operations there.
The attack came as international and Afghan security forces battled militants on several fronts.
On Sunday, US forces said 40 insurgents had been killed in Helmand province in the past 24 hours.
There are conflicting reports as to where the latest attack took place.
A foreign military spokesman said US soldiers and members of the Afghan National Army came under attack in Kunar province, near the border with Pakistan.
But Afghan officials insist the fighting took place in neighbouring Nuristan Province.
Nato reported that a small American Combat Outpost in Dara-I-Pech district of Kunar Province, came under heavy fire at around 04.30 local time.
It said insurgents had fired "with small arms, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars using homes, shops and the mosque in the village of Wanat for cover."
Local officials say a number of civilians and militants were killed in the attack.
Our correspondent says there are frequent attacks in the area.
In a separate incident on Sunday, a suicide bomber killed at least 21 people, many of them children, in a market in the Deh Rawud district of Uruzgan province.
Think Lang Vei SF outpost in I Corps RVN 1967, or, Plei Me in 1965. Lang Vei was actually penetrated by NVA sappers and overrun by regulars, before relief from Khe Sanh Combat Base could get there. I suppose the outposts in Afghanistan are smaller and less heavily armed and fortified than a SF camp in RVN, but don’t know for sure.
One of the brave soldiers killed was from Forsyth County Georgia, where I live. He and his young wife attend my parent’s church. He was supposed to come home on FRIDAY!

A handful of troops were dropped off on the side of a remote mountain - with pickaxes - to pickax out a shelf to set up a small firebase in the middle of "Taliban Central" - they had only been there a couple-three days - not enough time to have much in the way of a defensible position - and I can almost guarantee you, not enough detection devices to alert them of the enemy creeping up on them and obviously, we had no eyes in the sky watching out for them - or we could have seen that many enemy - a small, a VERY SMALL unit against what they are now saying up to 300 enemy...
The mountains in the Kunar are the infamous Hindu Kush - just the terrain itself is dangerous. It so isolated that the locals don't even speak Afghani - but Pastu.
This little band of soldiers were like ducks in a shooting gallery...and I can tell you one thing with certainty -
these soldiers did not "just drop their guard and bunch up"

a bit more information and a video as well as a pic showing what one of those little mountainside firebases look like - overrun by up to 300 - picture yourself in that situation...and I can all but guarantee you that air cover was not as swift as it should have been - indeed, they never should have had to call for it - the head honchos should already have had eyes in the sky over watching them -

Second, where the hell did you get the idea the Johnny Walker Lind had anything to do with his death? Johnny was a poor grunt who was never fully trusted. He was a low level fighter, nothing more.
I've read many accounts of Mr Lind, but I'm not sure I've read anything you've posted.
I'm not a big Johnny fan, but let's not dump all the worlds problems on him.
He is the scum on this earth and worse than I can describe, but he is not responsible for everything bad that happened in Afghanistan. This is an example where you shouldn't believe everything you hear about someone and understand, there are things that you will never see.

Who knows, weather may have been adverse for air operations. Many things are possible. Perhaps a chain of improbable events led to this. What I can say with confidence is nothing new in the annals of human conflict happened here.
