A real police state

It is fashionable among those on the left to fantasize that they live in a police state, here in the US, and that they virtuously resist by "speaking truth to power". They imagine that they take great risks in doing so as they protest in front of the White House, and feel as if they touch greatness, modern kin of the great leftist revolutionary heroes of lore.
It reminds me of something I read a while back, about Gunter Grass. He grew up in Nazi Germany, back in the day. It was written by Tom Wolfe:

I do not know how many people recall Steven. His USS Clueless blog was a fav of mine. It really is a shame people harrassed him so badly that he quit. This blog of his is mostly anime and manga but occasionally he posts interesting political stuff. This is (IMHO) a classic. He doesn't allow comments on his rare political posts. Just enjoy the genius and please don't harrass him :)

I think the people he was speaking to in that blog should buy this book:

thanks, that was interesting, the liberals are "always" accusing the GOP / Conservatives of running a "Police State"...
it would be very interesting to place them in the non-public areas of China and/or the Glorious Peoples' Republic of North Korea's "Worker's Paradise"....
and have them give, their views afterwords....

Den Beste is a smart guy; it’s too bad he wastes so much of his mental energy on analyzing what are basically cartoons.
To: snarks_when_bored
He used to post on current events and such. He was one of the
smartest blogger of the time but he had health problems and people kept hounding him. We lost a smart voice and a great analyst when that happened.
To: Dawnsblood
I used to read Den Beste’s blog now and then...he had good instincts and expressed himself clearly. I’ve clicked once or twice on his anime pages, but found them completely uninteresting. I’ve seen enough anime to know what they’re like: silly, adolescent, dark characters experiencing silly, adolescent, dark adventures...Scooby Doo meets Dark Shadows...

Good piece. Thanks for posting it.

It is true that I am not really interested in the “cartoon” part (a vast part of it) of his blog but I like to read his occasional comments on the world. So I presented what I still think is an interesting and insightful view on the left in America. No regret here. He is still a great thinker.
To: Dawnsblood
It is a police state if you are a terrorist, pervert or other assorted fruit or nut with a desire to hurt others.
That is why the left feels this way, they meet all the criteria. Obummer is going to fix all that if elected.

Yep.
America the Police State.
Where you go into the Customs Office and there is a row of soldiers with submachine guns along both walls and an officer screams at you:
“No picture! No picture! No camera! No camera!”
Oh, wait. I forgot. That was China, not America.

He is a national treasure. More’s the pity he stopped writing.
And it was not all harassment. He is also ill.

When I re-read this a while ago, I realized that you appear to have taken my remarks about Den Beste's anime obsession as a criticism of your posting. They weren't meant that way at all. Your post was a good one, and I agree that Den Beste's thoughts about matters of importance are usually interesting.
