A city jail guard may have betrayed his badge to help an accused cop-killer, slipping the ex-con a handcuff key in a foiled escape plot, sources told the Daily News.

The unidentified Rikers Island officer is under investigation for conspiring with Lee Woods, one of three men charged with killing Brooklyn police officer Russel Timoshenko, the sources said.

The murder suspect swallowed the key - believed to have come from the correction officer - but never had a chance to use it.

A jailhouse metal detector picked up the key in his digestive system on June 25, the day authorities blocked Woods from a scheduled Brooklyn court appearance, sources said.

"For a man this manipulative and violent to have a handcuff key is a pretty shocking betrayal," said one law enforcement source.

Two rookie correction officers - Auguste Durand, 31, and Michael Santiago, 24 - were fired the same day on charges of delivering marijuana, rolling papers, cigarettes and an occasional swig of booze to Woods, correction officials confirmed.

“They took away my Koran.”
....amazing how many black inmates are Muslim now...I see them as a future 5th column for Islamic expansion in the U.S.

Reverend Racist Wright would make a perfect prison imam with his hate white America message. I don't know the exact percentage but many inmates leave islam at the gate when they exit from prison. Many join islam for the protection it offers and also because of the big feast it has every year following the end of ramadana ding dong. There are no perks outside of prison and many don't have enough discipline to choose religion over the street life.

This is not a new phenomenon. It was happening in 1970 when I went to work in prison. It was spurred on by Malcom X's autobio which was all over the place. Nation of Islam ministers would come in and hold meetings.

We'd have to attend to supervise and listen to them talk about blue-eyed devils. When I complained I was excused from that supervision.

I was in Graterford, PA prison in the early 90s. They had a Mosque under the two chapels. Very elaborate. I remember the Lt. giving the tour took off his shoes, so we did also. Never saw that before.

I think that Islam has become more influential than the NOI and of course that's scarier than some of the murders the NOI committed on the streets. We had very few discipline problems with them. They seemed to do good time and followed the rules, despite the avowed hatred. The bean pies were good too : )

A day. LOL. There were 4,400 male inmates. The way I looked then, I was very noticable.
