The nose has a special shape that begins the cavitation bubble, and some of the rocket exhaust is redirected to help keep the bubble open.
Google search Shkval.

I’m sorry, I just don’t see Iranian subs as a risk. They have a total of three Russian-built kilos and a handful of knock-offs of a North Korean mini-sub. None of them is ever going to get within shooting range of a USN ship.

OTOH, there are places in the Gulf where ships pretty much have to operate within range of shore. Or, for that matter, within range of commercial vessels.

I can see a couple of scenarios where they could use this in a surprise attack. I can conceive of no way they could use this in a sustained campaign. So, at best, they could damage one US destroyer and lose all of their naval facilities in exchange. Which even they aren’t stupid enough to do.

What’s going on is simple - they bought an old Soviet-era weapon from the Russians, who’d found they had no use for it, and fired it off in an effort for domestic propaganda purposes. The Russians, of course, thought it’d be a fine idea because it would keep tensions up, and hence keep oil prices high.

They are still perfecting the transportation and launch system.

We've got no nuts, or as Karl Malden said in "Nevada Smith" ... "You haven't got the guts ... You haven't got the guts" ... "Yer yella ... You haven't got the guts".

Sure, they have the capability of taking out a ship or two, while we can turn every square inch of their country into a sheet of fused glass.
These demonstrations are more for domestic propaganda than anything else.

No Iranian vessel capable of carrying this weapon would get anwhere close to this distance from a US Navy ship without being destroyed first, especially after the British naval personnel incident from last year.

What about a Russian or Chinese ship? And what do we have to say officially about this, since Russian gave Iran this technology? Better yet, what are we going to do about it providing this is real?

The US Navy doesn't have a weapon like this.

Not that I've read about.
I know it's probably just wishful thinking on my part...
but I'll keep my fingers crossed that our "dark ops" workers have
got one developed in some watery "Area 51".

It works on the principle of Supercavitation.

Which got a decent bit of press (in either Scientific American
or Popular Mechanics...can't remember which) maybe five years ago.

I sent a xerox of an article to my younger, smarter cousin
(an electrical engineer) when it came out.
He and my less-geeky self were pretty shocked at the potential
of the super-cavitating methodology.
Especially with the potential of a submarine firing off super-cavitating
torpedos that would just "pop up" as missles just off-shore of
critical shore-line installations.
Pretty d-mned scary.

Where Russian and Chinese vessels are concerned, I'll defer to our DoD to hope they're keeping up with the latest dection systems. As for what we'll say to the Russians for providing the Shkval system, it's likely the response will be the same as the scheduled delivery of the S-300 missile system:

We'd prefer you don't do that, then proceed to study the best ways to defeat it.

From Wikipedia

“In 2005, DARPA announced the ‘Underwater Express program’, a research and evaluation bid to establish the potential of supercavitation. The program’s ultimate goal is a new class of underwater craft for littoral missions that can transport small groups of Navy personnel or specialized military cargo at speeds up to 100 knots. The contracts were awarded to Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics Electric Boat in late 2006.”

I think I remember this article. Wan’t the picture they released later proven to be a picture/film clip of an Australian ship that the Australian Navy sank for a training exercise?

“It seems to me that once you hit a certain speed it would require a massive amount of fuel to move it a smidge faster.”

Look up super cavitation on Google. Essentially the torpedo is not in contact with the water.

Iran Tests Fastest Subsurface Missile

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has successfully test-fired the world's fastest subsurface missile in its recent military exercise.

The IRGC Navy has launched the Hout missile which has a velocity of 100 meters per second and no warship can escape it even if it is equipped with anti-missile systems.

During the military exercise the IRGC test-fired advanced medium and long-range missiles including advanced ones which could hit targets within a range of 2,000 kilometers.

The Iranian war games and missile tests are viewed as a strong response to intensified threats by the Zionist regime and the United States.

Speculation that Israel could bomb Iran has mounted since a big Israeli air drill last month. In the first week of June, 100 Israeli F-16 and F-15 fighters reportedly took part in an exercise over the eastern Mediterranean and Greece, which was interpreted as a dress rehearsal for a possible attack on Iran's nuclear installations.
