Spammers announce World War III
IT news ^ | 7/10/08 | Robert Jaques

Hackers are deluging web users with malware-laden spam claiming that World War III has started following a US invasion of Iran. Security experts warned today that spam emails with subject lines including 'Third World War has begun', '20000 US Soldiers in Iran' and 'US Army crossed Iran's borders' have been intercepted.

The emails contain links to a malicious webpage that displays what appears to be a video player showing the mushroom cloud of a nuclear explosion.

Text on the page reads: 'Just now US Army's Delta Force and US Air Force have invaded Iran.

'Approximately 20000 soldiers crossed the border into Iran and broke down the Iran's Army resistance.

'The video made by US soldier was made today morning. Click on the video to see the first minutes of the beginning of World War III. God save us.'

However, Sophos warned that users visiting the webpage and clicking on the 'video player' run the risk of being infected with the Troj/Tibs-UO Trojan and a malicious JavaScript hidden on the website as Mal/ObfJS-AY.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, said: "Hackers are taking advantage of the fact that many people today get their fix for breaking news via the internet.

"People, especially those with loved ones in the Middle East, may rush to watch the video without engaging their common sense.

Probably the same people who sent the “Beijing Olympics Canceled due to 2nd Earthquake” spam a few weeks ago.

So 20,000 troops are invading an area where a nuclear weapon was just detonated?

And these guys want to call themselves hackers.

I suggest everyone warn friends and family. Trojans and viruses suck.

You just have to wonder what inspires these dumbas$es to do this stuff. Is it a foreign country trying to damage our communication? Some of the phrasing in the video message made we wonder. The words are transposed and unusual “today morning”, etc.

Most likely they want to cripple our ability to communicate. I would guess but please warn anyone you know who uses e-mail.

Pure simple malice.

As for the phrasing, there are quite a few hackers in east Europe and Turkey.

SingFreedom,

The majority of attacks come from one country. I know about this first hand and at great personal expense. At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, we are at cyberwar and no one seems to know about it.

One of the best decisions I've made as a CEO was to turn off our site to IP addresses from non-English speaking countries.

Anyone who opens this email hoping to get news that isn’t on the TV deserves everything they get.

I just don’t want their stupidity to slop over to my email where I’ll have to delete it.
