North Korean Soldier Shoots Tourist From South Korea [Dead]
WSJ ^ | July 11, 2008 | EVAN RAMSTAD and SUNGHA PARK

A North Korea soldier shot and killed a South Korean woman on Friday near a tourist resort in the North, a stunning incident that will test the two countries' relations after they have been fraying for several months.

North Korean officials told the resort operator that the shooting occurred about 5 a.m. on a beach that it deems off-limits to the South's tourists. The shooting was the first in the decade since North Korea began allowing visitors to a resort at Mount Kumgang, a small range of scenic mountain peaks that's famous in both countries...

For Hyundai Asan, the shooting is likely to bring an abrupt halt to what was shaping up to be its best year ever for the resort.

Yep. As a general rule, it's really, really bad for future business when tourists get shot at the resort (for whatever reason).

I wonder what it was that the North Koreans did not want her to see. Perhaps Jung-Il was sunbathing in the nude.

I dunno, this makes the experience altogether more DPRK-ish, you know? AUTHENTIC!

They should also set up some plastic mines, or something, or actually blow up someone's teacup poodle, maybe?

Maybe glare at them as they arrive, and rifle through their belongings, just to sex it up, some?

I just don’t understand this kind of thinking.

How do you defeat a rogue/communist nation?

My vote is for killing every last man, woman, and child located therein. However, such “barbaric” methods are not in vogue these days; but I can tell you how you DON’T defeat them:

Send them food aid, technology assistance, grant them MFN trading status, SEND THEM TOURISTS!

Oh Lord, the bleeding-heart leftists You have sent among us will be the death of us all!

Gee who knew North Korea was developing tourism as a big industry?

Could it be, that communism needs the hard currency and injection of economic activity that tourists bring?

But I thought communism was the ultimate utopian economic and social system. I thought communism feared being infected by the virus of capitalism. The East Germans used to say that they built the Berlin Wall to keep the bad influences of West Berlin and West Germany out of their workers paradise.

Tourist Resorts in North Korea? Who knew....
Whats next Safari tours in Darfur?

While the loss of life is tragic, anyone traveling into a closed and controlled society like NK has to be knowingly doing so with an understanding that there could be a significant risk to life and limb.

Why shot her? Surely that sight would have caused her to stroke out.............

I’m sure this tourist must’ve posed a grave, imminent threat to the gargoyle’s empire...

What a great reason to shoot a tourist, for tresspassing on a beach.

I’m sure this will somehow be spun as America’s fault. Thus further fanning the flames of anti-Americanism in South Korea.

Since it was a woman tourist, it’s safe to say that she would not be prohibited from a Nodong area.

Except in designated areas, beach areas in both North and South Korea are restricted and guarded because they are infiltration routes for each nation’s spies.

DPRK would never allow a South Korean-sponsored beach resort to be set up next to a sensitive defense site, so there was probably nothing in particular in the zone she wondered in to.

The sentry who shot her knew there would be either be a prisoner captured or a dead body, hers...or his.

"Gee who knew North Korea was developing tourism as a big industry?"

I suspect that North Korea's experience roughly follows Cuba's. They brag and bluster a lot, but they are desperate for hard currency, and being small, they have quickly run out of things they can loot. Likewise, both Cuba and NK no longer can count on sponsoring client states. Neither China or the old Soviet Union can afford them.

And, of course, both are equally desperate to keep their populations captive.

Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Poland were all rogue/communist nations until fairly recently. Fortunately, the people therein seemed to escape your slaughter vote.
