What a CRAZY place!
South Korean ‘shot dead in North’
British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)
11-Jul 2008
A South Korean woman has been shot dead by a North Korean soldier while visiting a resort in the North Korean mountains, reports say.
The shooting took place at the Kumgang resort on the east coast.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting of the woman, said to be in her 50s, are not yet clear.
The resort is run by an affiliate of South Korea’s Hyundai Group and has attracted more than one million South Korean visitors since 1998.
Reports quoting the South Korean news agency Yonhap and the Hyundai Asan tour company suggest the woman was shot after straying into a restricted military area.
Officials from the South’s ministry of unification are said to be looking into the incident, but there has as yet been no official comment.
The Kumgang mountain resort offers South Koreans hotels, stores, a golf course and a spa. But it is also situated in a strategic naval zone and has a heavy military presence.
It is one of two North Korean tourist programs run by the company.
That was some brilliant work there on that series.
"Mount Kumgang , mountain, SE North Korea, rising to 5,374 ft (1,638 m). There are scenic ravines and caverns and many ancient Buddhist temples, as well as a modern resort, built and operated by a South Korean company and catering to South Korean tourists, at the foot of the mountain. "
It's within a stones throw from the DMZ.
I've been to both Sokcho and Gangneung and Mt.Kumgang is actually pretty close to Sokcho. It's a shorter distance between Mt. Kumgang and Sokcho than between Sokcho and Gangneung. You can also see that it's pretty close to my Korean hometown of Chuncheon. Mt. Seorak-san is nearby. I have some pictures of it. Maybe I'll post them sometime.
It's also really, really close to Wonsan, where the NK commie used to store the USS Pueblo.
I don’t know... if it were me taking a vacation, North Korea would be one of the last places on my list.
Bump.
Japanese reports say that she was shot some time after midnight (mimei) and that to get inside a restricted are, she (reportedly) had to scale over a two meter high fence. this is down on the beach area. i dont know if anyone will get to the bottom of it. she is as dead as a duck now, and nothing will bring her back. remember, the DPRK military has the Soviet-KAL001 Airliner mentality when it comes to shoot first and ask questions later.
