NEW YORK -- Evan Wright had no idea what he was getting into when he was assigned to travel with the Marines 1st Reconnaissance Battalion in the first weeks of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
When Wright, then a correspondent for Rolling Stone, was picked to ride with the special forces unit, the other reporters gathered at the Kuwait Hilton to find out where they would be embedded "looked at me with sheer hatred and envy," he said.
"I didn't know what 1st Recon was, but if all of these reporters look so jealous, it must be a good spot," Wright recalled thinking.

The liberal TV critic in my newspaper calls it "liberal propaganda." It likens Iraq to Vietnam.
He gave it half a star.
If my memory serves me right, Evan Wright is a RAGING liberal.
He works for Rolling Stone, I am pretty sure I have read his work before.
I would not soil my hands or part with a penny for the scumbags at Rolling Stone.
I’m very skeptical.
Time-Life-Warner-Turner owns both Jann Weiner’s Rolling Stoned and HBO.
Big Media circle jerk.
I wouldn’t expect anything from this.
Rolling Stoned also embedded a Democrat writer in the Bush 2004 campaign. Isn’t that something? Investigative journalism in how the “enemy” plans a campaign?
And the public was “shocked” to learn that the Bush 2000 debate rehersal tape was stolen and mailed by a Democrat.
My default channel is the Military Channel!
The Pentagon ought to re-consider the concept of embedded journalists.
I don’t know these journalists mentioned here (although Rolling Stone is like the Pravda Youth Daily, but worse, but from what I see
- journalists now feel “entitled” to be embeds
- they may understand the danger, but certainly expect protection
- is any scrutiny made of their coverage of the troops and what they will say afterwards?
- many are using these to make a nice bundle of money off their stories and the sacrifices of the soldiers they embed with. Is this being abused?
The book was really good.
Not biased...just a look at the Marines being Marines.
Side note. This was the peace then wartime Marine Corps.
The MC that Wright wrote about was still “blowing the dust off” from years of non war. I was told by a gyrene radioman that the corps runs much smoother as a war machine now that it did that first year..... combat experienced NCO’s and Officers doing realistic training, most of the bed wetters have been run out etc.
Anyone else heard this?
Well where would you put Roggio or Yon?
I thought the guy that said "vote Republican" looked like an actor I recognized. Can't think of his name, a real "B" list guy, but I guess not. Unless he enlisted.

There might be hope...
Dennis Miller (when he had his conservative talk show on) had Evan Wright, along with some Marines on the show.
E Wright didn;t seem like a raging loony when interviewed. The fact that he showed on Dennis Miller (when everyone knows he’s a Republican and pro-Bush) says something otherwise. BUT I will be watching the 1st episode just to make sure...
Hey Hollywood, we get it. You hate the war and you hate the troops.
Just don’t expect us to watch your tantrums.
I thought this as well. I bought the book without very high expectations. If they stay true to the book, it will be fine.
“I thought this as well. I bought the book without very high expectations. If they stay true to the book, it will be fine.”
That is the trick... HBO is not known for staying true to much of anything....
I'll check this thing out at the link but I doubt I'll be tuning in. Free Republic, and in particular SandRat keep me well informed about our troops in Iraq.
And of course I get first hand knowledge from our troops as well, through my friendship with some of these fine men. My VFW involvement and my aquaintance with and contact with the Wounded Warrior group and Rolling Thunder chapters here are also sources of up to the minute info.
I don't need HBO to inform me, any more than you do, brother.
Thank you Lord for SandRat!
Well said...I pinged the two of you only because the article mentioned Haditha. I don’t have HBO on our cable package and from what I’ve heard about them here is the reason I don’t subscribe.
