Libertarians Favor Obama and Other Looks at Election 2008

Libertarian voters make up 4% of the nation’s likely voters and they favor Barack Obama over John McCain by a 53% to 38% margin. Three percent (3%) would vote for some other candidate and 5% are not sure. These results, from an analysis of 15,000 Likely Voter interviews conducted by Rasmussen Reports, challenges the conventional wisdom which assumes that strong support for a Libertarian candidate would hurt John McCain.

Why would some Libertarians favor a Marxist?

So now Libertarians favor higher taxes on the rich, income redistribution, socialized health care, gun control, etc.?

Apparently, if this poll is correct.

That Libertarians would favor a socialist demonstrates an astonishing and unfortunate lack of political consistency. It not does not speak well of Libertarians.

Many who claim to be libertarian do not even know what libertarianism is or what it stands for. They know they are pro-choice and in favor of legalizing many drugs and that’s all they need to know.

I’m surprised by this. I would think more libertarians would be voting 3rd party. Baldwin and Barr are far closer to libertarian ideals than either of the 2 major candidates.

Actually, Libertarians don’t take a position on abortion. They are typically evenly split on that issue.

Well, I would guess some Libertarians “main” issue could be drug legalization or anti war/ anti foreign involvment...which could lead them to Obama.

Or smaller government, lower taxes which would lead you to, at the very least, vote against Obama.

Wait, did I say the do? I’m against abortion, but I think it should be a state issue. It’s not a federal issue UNLESS life is defined at conception, then the government would be protecting legal life (and real life in my opinion).

THIS LIBERTARIAN FREEPER IS NOT SUPPORTING OBAMA!!

I am sure that many of my libertarian friends won’t either as it get closer to November. I think they are just frustrated with Bush but even more so with the Republican Party

I guess it all depends on how they want to break people down.

A lot of libertarians wouldn't define themselves as "socially liberal."

They just don't want government to get involved in anything.

The fact that Rasmussen Reports apparently misuses the word "fiscal" isn't an encouraging sign.

But there is at least one "Libertarian for Obama".

He says he's "a North Virginia attorney who used to live in the same Washington, D.C. apartment building as Barack Obama and his wife and had the good fortune to share an elevator ride once with him."
