According to this site MALIA: Hawaiian form of Mary, meaning "beloved".

I'm afraid the site is mistaken. "Mary" is derived from Miriam, which means "bitter," not "beloved." As I understand it the mother of our Lord was actually named Miriam. So the Obamas have shot themselves in the foot again.

I hate this stupid crap about giving American kids African names. My parents did not give me an ethnic name from the country in Europe dad came from. I'm an American and I got an American name because my parents were proud to be Americans. Apparently the Obamas don't feel the same way. Oh, but we knew that; Mrs. Obama told us that she only recently began to feel proud of America.

I think this is rampant silliness. Obama grew up in Hawaii and it’s clear from what I’ve read that “Malia” is a fairly common girls name in Hawaii. So maybe he knew people named Malia growing up and liked the name? Sheesh, we’re in trouble if THESE are the things we’re using against our opponent.
