Former South Bay lawmaker considers run at governorship

SACRAMENTO - Former South Bay Republican congressman Tom Campbell - a fiscal conservative, social moderate and respected academic who twice before unsuccessfully sought statewide office, is eyeing a possible run in 2010 to replace Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Campbell, 55, filed papers last week to form an "exploratory committee" for governor, which allows him to begin raising money for a potential bid. He joins two other GOP moderates from Silicon Valley - state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and former eBay chief Meg Whitman - among Republicans who have expressed interest in running.

On the Democratic side, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Attorney General and former Gov. Jerry Brown, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Lt. Gov. John Garamendi are likely or possible contenders to succeed Schwarzenegger, who is termed out of office in 2011.

Campbell boasts a sterling academic résumé - he earned a doctorate in economics and a law degree from Harvard - and during five terms in Congress gained a reputation as an independent thinker willing to challenge party orthodoxy. He served briefly as Schwarzenegger's finance chief.

“It’s actually not eBay so much but the practices of Paypal.”

And so can you be specific about the practices of PayPal, which trouble you. The services which buyers and sellers voluntarily use?

If you are going to malign the integrity of somebody, give specifics!!

Campbell would be better than Brown or the Reconquista mayor of LA

He'd be better than Ted Bundy, Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer too. So what's your point? (or are you the ghost of FairOpinion?)

And I’m not so sure of Simon’s and certainly not Lungren’s conservatism anymore...

Please don't put those two int eh same sentence. Bill Simon is one of the most decent men to ever run for public office in California, and I will personally vouch for his conservative credentials...anyone who says otherwise has me to deal with.

Lungren is an idiot.

Campbell’s Ph.D. in economics is from the University of Chicago; he earned his B.A. degree from there as well.

CA was too stupid to put Tom in charge,

No, CA is too liberal to put someone like Tom McClintock in charge.

CCPOA- liberal or conservative (biggest contributors to any campaign/ initiative)?
CA Teacher's Assoc.- liberal or conservative?
Hell, for that matter, every California State Employee- liberal or conservative?
Trial Lawyers- liberal or conservative?
University professors- liberal or conservative?
MediCal recipients- liberal or conservative?
Every sucker who's getting a free-ride on a government teat- liberal or conservative?

See a pattern here? What you may notice (in addition to the liberal slant) among those mentioned is that each represents a significant portion of any budget. A 'drain', if you will.

And, as 'social overhead' costs to society- they allow little or no wiggle-room for investments in infrustructure like dams, nuke plants, even glorified wind and solar (if your butt is green) sans a major tax hike.

As to having Tom represent us, it is a great thing. Perhaps we can show the rest of the state how to get things accomplished, things like energy, water projects, flood control, etc.

My biggest disappointment with Arnold is that he's been unable to use the 'bully pulpit' effectively at all, what with all his muscles and hollywood celebrity. [Has Maria been 'cutting his hair'? (see: Sampson)]

As the seventh or eigth largest economy in the World, it is still quite a luxury to fund (to the extent we do) these budget termites.

This $15 billion budget deficit may be a blessing in disguise. Collapsing under the weight of it's own malfeasence, whatever hardships may ensue could bring about a new era of "what can my country do for me", reality. Then again, maybe not.

Me, I'm looking forward to secession from the coastal cities and electing an East California governor instead. We could sell them our excess water, and, we'd have access to the gold in the Mother Lode. Win, win baby!

It does say BRIEFLY. The true problem, which Arnold attempted to address in the 2005 special election, is the stranglehold Rats have on the Legislature (nearly a supermajority) and Big Labor.

Are you running? Assuming you’re not, who is your “great conservative savior” going to be this round? Surely not McClintock again!

We could nominate my cat. He'd be just as likely to lose, but we'd spend a whole lot less money on him that the likes of Campbell.

I give Campbell credit for one thing... he had the balls to vote for impeachment. In a Clintonista district like his, that was pretty impressive for a RINO.
