Pregnant bystander may have been grazed by deputies' gunfire

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies who fired multiple shots at a man they were chasing in East Los Angeles late Friday afternoon may have grazed a pregnant bystander, authorities and a relative of the woman said Saturday.

The incident began about 5 p.m. when deputies responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at Fetterly Avenue and 6th Street, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

When deputies arrived, a man pulled out of a nearby driveway and crashed head-on into the deputies' patrol car, he said.

The deputies later told investigators that they fired twice at the man when they saw him reach for a weapon on his dashboard, Whitmore said.

Deputies said the man then ran from his car. Two additional deputies who had been called to the scene also shot at him, authorities said.

No question the man they were chasing escalated the incident. Interesting there is no report of him actually having a firearm.

Glad the pregnant woman is ok.

Good old LA Times. They need to mention the woman is pregnant to try to stir things up more, since a report of a scratch which may or may not have been the result of the exchange with the perp wouldn't be enough to make anyone get upset.

Gotta make the cops look bad, ya know.

I dunno, seems that if my wife were hurt by cops in this kinda case I would be raising a ‘stir’ as well.

If cops are hitting bystanders they they need to look bad. I do agree that the LA Times is a rag though.

Well, especially since this woman was pregnant. Did I mention she was pregnant? The woman was pregnant.

The so called 'reporter' is just trying to stir up ire. The woman was scratched - and they don't even know if this exchange caused it. And even if it did, how do they know the cops' did it - might have been the perp.

I must have misread that. I thought they said JFK served in Viet Nam.

The perp should be charged with attempted murder, and if that can’t happen according to the law then the law needs to be changed. It’s murder if a person unexpectedly dies of a heart attack during a robbery, and that even applies to the guy outside in the getaway car, so why not this?

Would they have reported the fact that she was pregnant if she was walking into a Planned Parenthood enclave?

I’d say in East L.A. the odds are probably better that an errant shot would hit a pregnant woman rather than one who is not pregnant.

So its ok if bystanders are hurt by errant shots as long as the police meant to hit the perp.

Did the perp even have a firearm?

or at least assault with a deadly weapon. Sad commentary that there is still such a divide between the public and law enforcement in LA.

Not one person has mentioned that she was carrying a fetus.

"...this woman was pregnant ...she was pregnant...The woman was pregnant."

My favorite repetitive line is.."John Kerry served in Vietnam.'

This story just points out we aren't safe anywhere, and enough laws cannot be made to make us completely safe. So best we be wary and carry.

Yep, she's pregnant. They told us she was pregnant.

Did you know she was pregnant? AND did you know she might, maybe, could have been scratched as a result of the cops actions?

Off with their heads!

You seem really disturbed by pregnant women. Where were you at when this all went down?
